From Boardroom to Breakdown: My Wake-Up Call to Self-Care
It’s funny how life sometimes gives us a wake-up call wrapped in a package of irony. Picture this: you’re sitting in a sterile emergency room, the fluorescent lights flickering overhead, and the beeping of monitors providing an eerie soundtrack to your thoughts. The doctor’s voice cuts through the noise, delivering a verdict you never imagined you’d hear: “Stress is killing you.” It sounds dramatic, but at that moment, it felt like the universe was holding up a mirror and saying, “Look at what you’ve done to yourself.”

The Central Argument
Alright, let’s cut through the crap and get straight to the heart of the matter, shall we? Let’s talk about immortality - that big, shiny, forbidden fruit hanging from the tree of knowledge. The ultimate prize, the crown jewel of human aspiration. And here’s the kicker - it’s not just some far-fetched fantasy dreamt up by sci-fi writers or religious zealots. Gratitude
Almost 10 years ago I had a stroke in the amygdala of my brain. This is where unhealed trauma resides. I was 55. This left me with weakness on my entire right side, effecting my arm, leg, and right side of my face. I would choke on food, slur my speech, and infuriatingly and frustratingly, stumble on my words. I would have the word apple in my head. I could describe the colour, size, texture, the crunch etc. , but could not say apple. I fell often and developed a chronic habit of bruising myself. My mother died two weeks earlier from a “massive” stroke. This traumatic event brought to light revelations that I never would have predicted. Everything fell apart and everything fell into place.

Why I Chose Self-Care Over College: A Gen Z Perspective
I remember the moment like it was yesterday. I was standing at a crossroads, feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders, the pressure to conform, to fit neatly into the box society had built for me. “You need to go to college,” they said. “It’s the only way to make something of yourself.” The words echoed from family, teachers, friends—people who meant well, no doubt, but who seemed to be reading from a script I wasn’t sure I wanted to follow. It was as if everyone had already decided what my life should look like, but they weren’t the ones living it. I was. And in that moment, I made a decision that would change everything: I chose self-care over college.
