Plant Based Lifestyle–One Year Later
One year ago today, I embarked on a journey that has totally changed my life. After suffering in pain for 21 years after a car accident, and finding no relief through conventional medicine, I sought alternative methods. I asked the Divine for help. I was using a cane and a wheelchair seemed to be in my near future. I knew I had a trip to Italy coming up in 11-12 months. Something had to shift.

My Journey to Weight Loss
My name is Melissa Hensley. I am 32 years old. A few years ago after I had my son, I developed a hernia in my stomach that just got bigger over time. By the time I actually got up the nerve to go see a doctor and get it diagnosed it had become very large. My doctor sent me to a specialist who told me I needed to stop smoking and lose 30 pounds before he would help me. Ever since I was in high school I have struggled with my weight. After hearing this from the doctor I went on a life changing journey. I quit smoking and I asked my doctor to put me on adipex. For those of you who don't know what adipex is, it is basically the antidote for fat. He gave me a prescription for it and told me to take one with my breakfast. I decided that instead of eating breakfast, the adipex along with a soda (I'm totally addicted to soda!) WAS my breakfast. The adipex totally curbed my appetite and I was almost never hungry. The adipex was amazing. I loved it. I would skip lunch altogether. Around dinner time it would start to wear off and I would eat a small dinner. I starved myself to death and the weight quickly came off.

Garlic and Onions: Two Foods With a Medicinal Kick
On June 7th, 2017 the University of Guelph announced the findings of Prof. Suresh Neethirajan’s work with onions and the plant's ability to create a hostile environment for cancer cells in the body. Onions are an organic sulfur food, containing some powerful flavonoids. Flavonoids in the most simple explanation are the workhorse part of an antioxidant (Dimitrios, B. 2006). Antioxidants and flavonoids are highly researched because of anti-carcinogenic and anti-cancer properties (Borek, C. 1997; Le Marchand, L., Murphy, S. P., Hankin, J. H., Wilkens, L. R., & Kolonel, L. N. 2000; Lautraite, S., Musonda, A. C., Doehmer, J., Edwards, G. O., & Chipman, J. K. 2002). Onions contain two strong flavonoids, Anthocyanin and Quercetin. Years of research from around the globe has shown that Quercetin is a viable anti-cancer agent (Brisdelli, F., Coccia, C., Cinque, B., Cifone, M. G., & Bozzi, A. (2007) which is strengthened by Anthocyanin, which gives fruit color. While all onions contain this combination of flavonoids, red onions have the highest concentration of Anthocyanin.

Acid Reflux Disease Can Be A Killer!
The American College of Gastroenterology reports that more than 15 million Americans experience heartburn symptoms every single day. In the United States alone, pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter medications, promising to relieve symptoms of digestive disorders, generate over $53 million dollars in annual sales. You can’t pick up a magazine, watch television, or surf the Internet without being bombard by a slick and colorful media blitz of advertisements promoting a celebrity country comedian, sports hero, or “friendly fireman’s” preferred brand of acid reflux relief.

Being Diagnosed with a Deadly Disease that the World Deems Your Fault
Waking up to pee, sometimes 10 to 12 times per restless night. Sneaking downstairs to the fridge to indulge myself with bottles upon bottles of water, a few juice boxes, and cans of soda. Not being able to see clearly, everything shortly becoming a fuzz at times despite my 20/20 vision. Sitting in 7th grade pre-algebra class suddenly very confused. Getting unreasonably sick after eating a slice or two of pizza. Having emotional outbursts with no cause. My jeans becoming a little looser, even though my hunger could never be satisfied. Inside, I knew something was wrong, terribly wrong but I couldn't let myself believe that. I was 13, surely these changes were just part of growing up.As with any other Monday morning, I waited for the school bus with my older sister, who was a senior in high school at the time. I complained to her that I wasn't feeling well and that I didn't think I had the energy to play my saxophone in first period band that morning. She told me just to take it easy and maybe go to the nurse if I didn't get better.

A Different Kind of Positive
My driving motivations and how I’m trying to change my life are much more complicated than I had originally expected. Right about the time that I quit smoking the thought was that I would simply attempt to look on the positive side of things and continue about my life. Soon thereafter, I found that neither one of those things was as simple as I made them out to be. I had to find something to do to take away my stress, where I once used smoking for that purpose. The withdrawals were actually not even the worst part, as I found out through the first few months of wanting a smoke every single day. Quitting cold turkey was the only way for me, but I found that wanting to smoke every day put me even more on edge than the stress that was building up for lack of an outlet.

Caving into PMDD Cravings
Often enough and sooner or later, on one of the PMDD forums, a woman will post about eating an entire bag of "insert brand name" snack food. I totally get it. I myself have posted about eating giant bars of chocolate, entire bags of chips, too many pastries, and frozen yogurt...all at the same time. When you feel miserable, and there's nothing you can do about it, and the cravings are there...well, the indulgence can feel nurturing. I've stopped judging myself for these episodes because there's no point in it. I'm otherwise incredibly healthy and eat a very healthy diet. I exercise regularly too. Once a month, if I have a hormonally-induced need to just go totally crazy, I do. And I'm not about to beat myself up over it.
