Good morning, Vocal Media community, and welcome to the Monday Morning Huddle for April 7!

Today, I explore spiritual concepts related to the backyard bird. Commonplace worldwide, at any given moment, one is sure to encounter one of many breeds flitting about shrubs and branches, or skipping across lawns, twigs, and garden landscapes. Perhaps run-of-the-mill or unexciting to some, but the untrained eye lets all pass by.

Sparrow, finch, chickadee, hummingbird, cardinal, titmouse, wren, blue jay- no matter where you live, you are sure to have a feathered friend not far away.

But do you even notice our passerine pals beyond a side glance or half-heard song note in the all too often rat-race living of human existence?

Likely not, but it is of no fault of your own

As an avid birder, I am always on the lookout for regular geese, crow, or sparrow sightings and enjoy many a morning on my balcony sitting in an audience of one, watching, listening, and surrendering to my inner call for peace.

It's a peace unlike any other, and I afford myself this daily ritual to celebrate the simple moments of life, the ones that warrant the greatest meaning when allowed. "When allowed" may sound out of place. How could this be possible? One need not ask for permission to bask in the simple pleasures of nature, but all too often, without even realizing it, our worldly-focused mind skips over flora, fauna, and animal intricacies, favoring the material-driven mindset.

And in the blink of an eye, the beauty of a simple backyard bird flies by.

Too often, we deny ourselves the simplest treasures, we un-allow because we are physically focused.

By altering the concept and acknowledging oneself as a spiritual being first, living in a human body, perhaps then and only then will the human equation shift its calculations to a mathematical problem that actually adds up, making sense.

Something as simple as a bird might be the needed absent teacher.

Spiritual messengers 🐦🐦🐦

Cross-cultural spiritual beliefs herald birds as messengers bridging the earth and spiritual realm. Symbollic of hope and peace, the word of birds often lends comfort during times of distress and mourning. Flight ability speaks of soaring to the heights of one's soul journey, and wings draw parallels from angels, indicating a departed loved one's presence.

Specifically, backyard birds and their obvious company, nudges the otherwise distracted one to shift their center of attention away from man centered matters to the spiritual lessons waiting for one's attendance.

Consider this: if a bird is a teacher, are you present or is your spirit not listening, hence making you miss roll call?

Marked absent spiritually; think about that for a minute.

A busy lifestyle: work, one or more jobs (considering our economy), family, child rearing, elder care, bills, overdue bills, work commute, deadlines, appointments, meetings, and on and on...

These are non all inclusive examples of how and why people either are or become oblivious to nature's nurture.

Meanwhile, a little birdie just flew by, vying for someone's attention.

His attention spans much more than his wing span, the bird follows an internal flight plan, flying high, even on uncertain sky, simply because he can- and the bird, albeit absurd, wishes all will hear and heed his words.

Uplifted spirit, need not deny or fear it- JUST TRY IT!

"if a bird is a teacher, are you present or is your spirit not listening, hence making you miss roll call?" As a person who always has her head in the clouds, I'm a serial absentee, lol. Jokes aside, your piece was very thought provoking!

We recently bought a bird feeder and bath all because a robin decided to build a nest on the far right side of our porch. She finally got used to us walking to the front door and wouldn't fly away. Not the father though, whenever it was his turn to guard, he would fly away. I felt bad every time, lol. This was very uplifting and a great reminder to admire and appreciate the natural world. After all, it is a form of free entertainment. Happy Monday!!!

Hey Marilyn. This was just lovely for a Monday, especially as the sun is finally shining after raining for 752 years! (Perhaps not, but it felt like it). My family were all avid birdwatchers when I was growing up so naturally I hated anything related to feathers.... fast forward 20 or so years and now I am - ooh, look, a hawk, let's buy another hummingbird feeder! 🙄 Hope you're doing well.

Every morning when I walk the dogs, I notice many cardinals and crows and some smaller birds at the feeders. After walking and feeding the dogs I drink a cup of coffee and continue to watch the birds. I believe that cardinals are messages from loved ones in heaven. Good work.
