Self-Healing Daily Practices

"Instead of worrying, pray or meditate or smile, or do all three"

In times like these it is important to keep a routine, not just to keep busy but to keep a healthy state of mind and being. Now, I am not talking about setting your alarm kind of routine (which is important to), I am talking about a self-care routine. Something you can continue to do daily to keep you grounded and peaceful during quarantine.

This self-care routine is something I have been incorporating into my daily life for the last 6 weeks and I have to say I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I have. I will talk you through the practices I have been doing and the results I have had with them. Feel free to incorporate one into your daily schedule or all of them!

1. Meditate

I know this is cliché to say the least but hear me out. Meditation is something I used to do maybe once or twice a week before quarantine, I understood the benefits and how powerful it is but a part of me thought: “I’ll do it when I have more spare time” or “I’m too busy now”. We are all in a time right now where we need to do nothing! We are being told it is okay to do nothing, there is nothing we must do as a priority like work or worrying about life. Now is the time to do meditation and learn the amazing benefits of it! I started meditating to ease any anxiety I was feeling about what is happening in the world and it gave me a sense of calmness. Now you can try doing it once a day or go cold turkey like I did and make it a habit to meditate every morning and every night. I started off doing 5-minute meditations then 10 then jumped to one-hour ones before bed.

I found meditations for boosting the immune system which is about breathing and visualising your immune system working perfectly – it is extremely powerful! Below I will link a meditation that I have been doing everyday to boost and support my immune system. I have to be honest, until I listened to this meditation, I didn’t actually know how the immune system worked! Meditation has many health benefits; I won’t list them all here, but you can search online in more detail.

Since doing meditation I have found I naturally am breathing through my stomach, many of us do not breathe through our stomach, we breathe hollow through our chest. Meditation teaches you to breathe deep and long which is the way we are born to breathe, using our lungs in full capacity.

I never thought I would fall in love with meditation but here we are. In fact, I enjoy it so much I have decided to study to become a meditation teacher! Who would have thought!

2. Qigong

Qigong (pronounced chi-gong) is a Chinese mind-body-spirit practice that involves movement and meditation to heal and help the body. It can be used for health, specific illness or disease in the body or for spiritual practice. It is gentle and anyone can do it. I recently introduced my granny to it, and she loves it and does it everyday now. I wanted to try it as I was looking for something to promote healing in my body as normally I do Reiki sessions but because of social distancing I am unable to at the moment.

Qigong is about the flow of movements that lead into one another and you repeat them whilst also deep breathing. I go outside in the beautiful sun and stand on my yoga mat and practice Qigong for about 5-10 minutes and then do it again a little later in the day as well. As someone who doesn’t exercise this is amazing to help you gain strength and move the body. Whilst practicing Qigong you breathe in the ‘chi’ energy and then release any stress and tension in the body. I feel amazing after doing it for 10 minutes. I can’t believe I didn’t try this sooner! I started by doing a healing Qigong practice which I will link below but you can find a Qigong on pretty much anything; muscle aches, illness, anxiety, stress, boosting the immune system or back ache.

3. Reading

I have read 2 books over the last 6 weeks which is probably more than I’ve ever read in a year before…

There is something about diving into a fresh book and reading outside or in the sun that just brings me so much peace and joy. I sway more towards self-development and growth books but I do love a good fiction book as well. The book I recently finished was The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma and it was beautiful to read.

Reading a good book takes you into a state of just being in the present moment. Something to occupy your mind as well as learning something and gaining knowledge at the same time. That’s pretty awesome! The good thing about reading is there is always more books to read, you can never be bored with it because there are hundreds of books you haven’t read yet!

Let me know below in the comments the book you are currently reading or what your favourite book is.

4. Being outside in nature

This is kind of incorporated into meditation and Qigong as I like to practice these outside, but there is something so serene and joyful about sitting in the garden on a lovely day. Not doing anything in particular but just simply being and listening to nature and the birds in the sky. I like to think about everything I am grateful for and if you feel stuck on this one, then start by what you can see in your garden; “I am so grateful for nature” or “I am so grateful for the weather today”.

To really feel grounded and connected to nature and the Universe try walking barefoot across the grass and just feel yourself connected to the earth.

5. Pamper session

Sometimes we need to just relax, and binge watch some Netflix with a cup of tea and biscuits. I have been setting up a relaxing environment in the evening with some candles, a nice cup of tea and some homemade cake. Just having that time to chill and do what you want to do. It’s nice to binge watch tv sometimes or watch some films you’ve wanted to watch but haven’t had time to.

It’s okay to allow your ego some time to do what it wants to do. During the day we are meditating and connecting to ourselves, expanding our awareness and consciousness, it’s like a treat for the ego in the evening to have that time to indulge. I’m all about being present and meditating but we do need to have that balance.

I hope you feel inspired to start your own self-care routine and you implement some of these practices into your own schedule.
