never ending

to your good health

the cure for old age

This is going to be part story, part explanation and part admitting I got a bit carried away. You see, I thought my ideas were what the world needed. In the beginning it went well, then ,as your well aware, it went a bit wrong.

I better start with a bit of context. A common phrase was that modern medicine made you live longer but not really better. It meant the same people were developing conditions like Alzheimer's, but there were many more of them. There was also a theory that in every human a certain enzyme in your body halved in number every year, because the eldest person was found to have one left at the end of their life.

So, it would be necessary to keep people healthy for longer and to find a way of increasing the numbers of the enzyme . Also healthy people would need healthy bodies, no brittle bones or failing hearts.

A big task but one I thought I could achieve. I had science on my side plus I had some backers who I could persuade to fund my endeavours. I may have to employ a bit of flattery as well as some blinding with science. The advantage I knew I had was that the rich want to live longer to enjoy there money.

I started at the end, so to speak. Why did the enzyme slowly disappear, why were the bodies so weak at the end and what could I do for it. I raided all the books, studies and files I could find. Added a few bits together, mixed a bit and ended up with what seemed a solution to good to be true.

I could find a way to make the enzyme last longer, a concentrated replacement to enable longer life. I also borrowed research on brain conditions and came up with my own solution to slow Alzheimer's from starting. I couldn't claim to make people immortal but could offer them a few more years on their luxury yachts.

I found a way to make the supplements and other medication easy to take and the journey began. My backers got first refusal and naturally they didnt refuse. I made sure to use plenty of long words and technical terms to persuade them. They really just needed to hear they would have a longer relationship with their money. At first I requested they didn't say anything to anyone so I could check for problems.

The problem I did have was I was looking for something not to happen. If they didn't die and didn't develop Alzheimer's it meant either I was a miracle worker or they were getting old. My eldest financial backer was in his mid seventies, while my youngest was closer to fifty. I watched them all but the oldest most closely.

While I knew my miracle needed longer testing , my clients didn't have the patience. They decided they wanted their spouses, children, squeezes and lovers to live longer with them. So i was persuaded to extend the test group and make more of my cure for getting older.

Unfortunately, one of the recipients had a nasty car accident and passed away. the family needed reminding my medication had limits. Immortality was a bit harder, though a couple gave me the feeling they would try it if able.

Instead I studied them all and looked for ways to improve and refine my creation. I didn't promise anything but I hoped I could make them healthier and maybe extend their lives further. At first there werent too many problems, mainly because most of the recipients were young enough that they could be naturally alive.

It did make me think briefly that I could have saved time by making a placebo, giving it to everyone and then heading for the hills. I admit that this problem was mine. I found I could do it, I believed it worked so my ego took over and I made the goods.

I began to worry over the next few years as people reached older and older milestones. My eldest customer reached his eighties and indeed nineties without a problem. Obviously one person wasn't a test, but sooner more and more reached the big numbers. Then the obvious happened, people with piles of money want more, So they started making companies to sell my products , before they told me in fact.

Again ego over rode sense and the company began selling my cure. The cure for death was the tag line, live double your life span was another. As my backers they had access to my discovery and to how I made it. Factories took over from my small lab and so it began.

As time went by more people seemed to be living longer, less people were suffering ill health and all seemed good in the world. Then it slowly stopped being so good. People started dying of other illnesses and other accidents, all things I didn't design the medication for but still I seemed to be blamed. It was like I had cured measles and was being blamed by those catching a cold.

Naturally social media found out where this miracle started and then the abuse began. I got abuse from people who werent made immortal, those that thought I was nicking gods job and the usual telling me that although I was an expert they knew better, many bridges had lost their trolls. There was of course support from other experts but the trolls decided my supporters must have been paid to sell my product.

By this stage all my research and testing had been shared, the testing was shown and there were numerous testimonies from satisfied customers. The same trolls carried on telling us we were wrong because someone on u tube had told them I was wrong. People with no scientist skills or experience were telling me how I was wrong.

Then people died, people who had lived well above average limits. Perhaps not surprisingly there were still complaints from family members about their dearly beloved only living to 130. Then the obvious happened, law suits and class actions and more. The backers that believed in me were suddenly being sued, I was the scientist but they the money men.

Then the next obvious step, the money men wanted a piece of me. You see by living longer they were avaidible for court for much longer. So the lawyers and judges took their time and the rich men that wanted to live longer were just living longer. So to borrow a famous phrase , time to exit stage left. That's why this letter is missing a standard part, no address at the top.

I managed to get away with a few pounds and one other important thing, I didn't take my own medicine. I can feel a few more creeks in my bones and my memory isn't what it was. The moral of the story is ,I suppose , dont mess with nature. I don't know how long I have but it will be exactly and naturally long enough.
