How to Build the Life You Want to Live

By Klara KabelikPublished about 4 hours ago 3 min read

I listened to the Mel Robbins podcast the other day, on How to Design Your Life with Debbie Millman, and it had me thinking, imagining, and visualizing what I would want for myself 5-10 years further down the road.

I didn’t see a house, or a particular area in which I lived, but I saw my home. Being married to the man I love, and us running around with our two, small kids.

In terms of my career, I envisioned that my writing had taken off, and allowed me to be financially free, doing something that I am passionate about, as my job.

But the difference between who we are now and who we want to be, is how we choose to behave in the present, so that our actions today can shape the future we want to live in.

A concept however, that is much more easily said than it is actually achieved.

For instance - as I am writing this article, I struggle with the fact that I am currently without work, in a country where the unemployment rate has risen to a staggering 6.8%.

The positions that I once held - in the non-profit sector - no longer serve me, due to the negative impact they’ve had on my mental health over the past couple of years. Thus, leaving me at a crossroad of figuring out where I want to work and why.

Do I take any role that’s available to me only to pay the bills? Or do I look for something that will genuinely make me happy, or less miserable overall?

On a personal level, I am trying to work on my relationships - the one pertaining to my love life, as well as those involving family and friends.

However, despite my circumstances at this time, I am still choosing to manifest the life I want, by taking small steps to achieve my goals.

In terms of writing, I am now posting on two blogging platforms, to build an audience and have people recognize my name.

I already have eight articles published on the topics of Employment Services and Women’s Issues, from the previous organizations in which I worked.

Furthermore, I have also branched out into poetry, and submitted some of my poems to two different magazines, in hopes of being published in their next issue.

Meanwhile, in regards to my relationships, I am taking it one day at a time. Trying to improve my communication, set boundaries, and focusing on my values to help me navigate my decisions.

As a person whose biggest flaw is how she struggles with patience, I am learning, and finally understanding, that change doesn’t happen overnight.

We can’t go from point A to point B in a heartbeat or a blink of an eye, because it isn’t about the final destination. It’s about the journey that took us there.

Every small step that you and I take in this moment, is what will lead us down the path that we want to pursue.

So, while I am actively dealing with some difficult situations, I am still chasing the life I want to manifest.

Putting in effort now, so that I can get to where I want to be, or at least get closer to my future self than where I’m at today.
