1. Don't forget to drink water! If you don't drink enough water, your body will hold onto any excess fat it finds inside you (your belly) and use it to help keep you alive. So if you're eating right and exercising regularly, then you should have no problems shedding those extra pounds. But if you're not drinking enough water, your body might store the fat where you don't want it -- in your belly. 2. You'll need a plan! Your best bet is to follow a diet low in saturated fats, cholesterol and trans fats. These foods raise your bad cholesterol levels and increase the risk for heart disease. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, poultry, seafood and nuts. Avoid red meat, butter, cheese, fried food and sugary treats.

3. Get moving! Exercise can burn calories faster than just about anything else. Even a brisk walk after dinner can help you shed some pounds. So can strength training three times a week. If you'd prefer to work out at home, try using your own bodyweight to build muscle tone. Pushups, squats and lunges are great exercises for toning your arms, legs, back and stomach.

5. Keep track of what you eat! Write down everything you put in your mouth. That way, you'll know how many calories you consume each day. Once you've written them down, compare them to the calorie intake guidelines established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). 6. Talk to your doctor! Your doctor can give you advice on how to lose weight safely. 7. Find a buddy! Having someone to share your goals with can motivate you even more. Plus, having an accountability partner means you won't cheat yourself out of the progress you deserve.

8. Focus on exercise! Regular physical activity is critical to losing weight and keeping it off long term. Exercise burns calories, builds muscle and keeps your heart strong. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity at least five days per week, or 20 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity twice a week. Strength training is also important! 9. Drink lots of water! To stay properly hydrated, aim for eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day. When you sweat, your body loses fluid and needs replenishing. Drinking plain H2O increases your chances of flushing out harmful substances, such as sodium, that cause bloating.

10. Be patient! Losing weight takes time. Expect to spend at least six months on your journey toward fitness. Remember, your goal isn't to lose 10 lbs. in two weeks. Rather, focus on building strength and endurance over a longer period of time. Your metabolism will slow down as you age, so start now for maximum results later.

11. Find motivation! Getting started on a new lifestyle change can seem overwhelming. Remind yourself of the benefits of losing weight while focusing on short-term wins. Celebrate small achievements, such as walking 15 minutes to class or buying a new pair of workout clothes.

12. Keep a journal! Keeping a diary of your workouts and diet will help you monitor your progress. You can write down the date, type of workout and calories burned. A simple notebook works well.

13. Follow your gut instinct! Before committing to a diet, ask yourself whether you really believe it's right for you. If you feel unsure, it probably isn't.

14. Take baby steps! While diet and exercise alone are often sufficient to achieve optimal health, it's okay to add supplementation. Consider high quality multivitamins and fish oil.
