How Many Calories Can You Burn During Sex? Let It Burn
Forget about Pilates, HIIT, or jogging for a time. Sex boosts daily calorie burn?
Although sex couldn't possibly compare to CrossFit and jogging in terms of calorie burn, you can still anticipate burning a few calories when you get into the bed.
Let's use sex: how many calories are burned during sexual activity
In a tiny 2013 study of 21 healthy, heterosexual couples in their early 20s, researchers discovered that during 24-minute sex sessions, males burnt an average of 101 calories (4.2 calories per minute), while women burned 69 calories (3.1 calories per minute) (including foreplay). Armbands were worn by participants to monitor movement and calculate the number of calories expended throughout four sex acts.
Researchers came to the conclusion that sex sometimes qualifies as a "major workout." To be honest however, it looked as if the couples in this research were working on the task for longer than usual.
Researchers said in a 2013 analysis that it is a fallacy that having intercourse burns between 100 and 300 calories. They found that a 150-pound male operating at a moderate level would expend 3.5 calories per minute during intercourse, which is comparable to walking at a speed of 3 miles per hour. Yet, given that sex typically lasts between 5 and 6 minutes, an average sexcapade only results in the burning of 21 calories.
Also, they remind out that watching TV for 6 minutes burns just 1/3 of that amount of calories (7 calories), possibly to emphasize the idea that having sex isn't usually a calorie-burning activity.
The last word on calories burnt during sexual activity
At a moderate intensity, people may burn 3 to 4 calories per minute when having sex.
Although it is often said that one sexual act may burn between 100 and 300 calories, this requires at least 25 minutes of activity.
Hence, whether you exercise for two minutes or twenty, how long you exercise for and how hard you work will determine how many calories you burn.
Be active to increase the number of calories expended during sex
Want to increase how many calories you burn when grinding and bumping? What you should do is:
Go on. This one is apparent, I guess. Keep that (moderate to high) intensity activity going for longer if you want to burn more calories. Moreover, have it more often, but first, make sure your partner is on board.
sweat a lot. Maybe put on a heater and roll about in bed. You'll see a modest increase in calorie burning when it's hotter and sweatier. (And, remember to drink water; after all, it is a workout.)
Shake things up. A more challenging exercise than missionary will come from contorting into a pretzel, doing Downward-Facing Dog, or attempting some standing positions.
What additional advantages does sex provide for your health?
Beyond making you feel fantastic, having sex has benefits for your health that far outweigh calorie burning:
- a sound heart. A homosexual life may result in a heart that is healthier. According to a 2011 study, males who had sex at least twice a week were less likely to suffer from heart disease (compared to men who had it once a month).
- camaraderie and respite from stress. The happy chemicals prolactin and oxytocin are produced after intercourse. These hormones are related to emotions of contentment, relaxation, and closeness.
improved sleep Orgasming before falling asleep, according to 2019 study, improves sleep.
more powerful pelvic floor. Your bladder, colon, and uterus are all supported by your pelvic floor muscles, which is crucial. The vagina, anus, and urethra tighten up and are raised as they constrict during sexual activity (which aids in bodily processes like healthy, easy peeing). Also, having a healthy pelvic floor may enhance the enjoyment of sex.
According to estimates from a few studies, average-intensity intercourse burns roughly 3 to 4 calories per minute, or about the same as brisk walking.
Nevertheless, don't count on it burning a lot of calories unless you're having marathon sex sessions or twisting yourself like you're in Cirque du Soleil (in which case, more power to you).
But hey, sex has a lot more advantages than just helping you lose weight. In the end, having sex should be enjoyable rather than simply another exercise.
