FRIDAY
- Meditated this morning to Happy Not Perfect. I have been enjoying their series “Frontline Worker’s Self-Care.” Today’s “Three Deep Breaths” was fantastic.
- Nike Run Club. "First Run," 20 minutes. 1.11 miles. I listened to the Reggae Yoga playlist on Spotify.
- Ugh. I didn’t make it to work today, no thanks to the MTA. I waited for an hour and a half for a bus to arrive. Buses kept disappearing from their Bus Time app. They lied to me on Twitter. I finally called to find out what was going on. No one could give me any information. So, I just decided that it wasn’t my day to go to work.
- During the 90 minutes I waited, I saw the dealer who, ordinarily works that corner. A not in the wood chipper Accomplice was Driving. They both entered the corner bodega, neither were wearing masks. Oddly enough the Driving Accomplice was wearing gloves. I suppose there are times in everyone’s life, when they have to hedge their bets, no? They both came out dinking wine coolers. Blech, I didn’t even like wine coolers when they were a thing back in the 80s. They got in the car, consuming from open containers of alcohol, and drove off. Perhaps…I’m just saying…perhaps it was a good thing that I wasn’t in a bus ahead of them going to work.
SATURDAY
- Another beautiful early morning Happy Not Perfect, Frontline meditation. Today’s was Affirmations For Kindness.
- Made it to my neighborhood’s green market. Bought fingerling potatoes, heirloom grape tomatoes, Bread Alone of course, and a huge round zucchini.
- Ran Nike Run Club’s guided "Next Run." 1.17 miles for 21 min, 19 sec. Listened to Spotify, my Daily Mix 1, which includes Matisyahu, and Rebelution.
- Before heading into my apartment I did Garmin’s 7 Minute Workout, which was actually 8.5 minutes. I burned 42 calories. Switched to Daily Mix 2, which is lead by Black Eyed Peas.
- Made the most tremendously great potato salad with the potatoes and tomatoes. I just wrote that poem for all of you. I think the thing that sealed it was having a hunk of Miyoko's Butter on hand. That stuff is goo-oo-oo-oo-ood.
- I also posted episode 6 of my podcast today. My Inner Kaz. This one was a lot of fun to put together. But then again, they all are. I’m covering my college years, and my antiquated film program.
SUNDAY
- So I tried to get through Happy Not Perfect’s Vocal Toning meditation, which is 44 minutes in length. This might not have been what I needed first thing in the morning. But I did indeed try. I got about halfway through.
- I put up a pot of my home brewed iced tea. Made with flax and dried apricots. I have been trying like mad to recreate the flax iced tea I had in Los Angeles last year at Leonor's, Studio City. They are not willing to share the recipe. Apparently it takes a long time to make. It tastes like it does, it’s so good. But after finding some delicious apricots at Sahadi’s this past week, I decided to make my own version.
- Did a 45 minute upper body work out. 1 lb hand weights, and my home made 5 lb kettle bell. Watched a bunch of You Tube videos. Including Vegan BBQ 3X Mains, Grilled Veg Bonanza! Wish I had seen this before I cooked the huge round zucchini yesterday. But that’s okay. It’s not like I have a barbecue, or even a grill pan. Wicked Healthy is such a great channel. Honorable mention to Healthy Crazy Cool. EVERYTHING that guy makes looks amazing. Lima/Butter beans in an air fryer. Who knew?
- I also watched Just Eat It: A Food Wast Story. Mind officially blown. Where has this documentary been the past six years of my life?
MY SERGIO TALKS
KAREN: So where did you go to high school?
SERGIO: I went to high school in Red Hook. It’s called Summit Academy Charter School. Which was a predominantly black school. So I was pretty much the only hispanic kid in there.
KAREN: Okay, and when did you graduate?
SERGIO: I graduated in 2018.
KAREN: Wow. Did you have any aspirations of attending college?
SERGIO: No. For me school was never my strong suit. I was always rebellious to the fact that, why would you make me do eight hours a day of work, in a building, in a system, and then make me go home, and then do some more work? This is not what I’m for. I know this deep down inside I’m worth more than books and papers. So I never—I attended college to please my mom. I tried to go after something that I thought I could like, and that was computer science. In all honesty, it was nothing that motivate me, so I had to make my departure as soon as possible.
KAREN: And where did you go to college.
SERGIO: I did a semester or two, with my old girlfriend, my ex, because she motivated me to care about going to school, and that was at BMCC (Borough of Manhattan Community College).
