Three cards about our day
Happy Thursday to you. As I shuffled the cards for today, the first two cards jumped out of the deck. The third card also fell out while shuffling, but it took a little longer. Usually, when that happens, the message is urgent, so let’s dive in.
Our first card speaks to our day, the Four of Cups. The card shows a man sitting at the base of a tree with his legs and arms crossed. He wears a red shirt, a green tunic, blue pants, and red shoes. There are three cups on the ground in front of him, and a fourth cup is handed to him by a hand coming from a cloud.

The man in the card looks like he’s exhausted. He needs to take a break. The fours in the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck show scenes of rest. In this case, he’s resting because he’s emotionally depleted. Drained. A break is needed here. The cups symbolize our emotional mind, and here his cups are empty. But there’s hope because the universe is giving him another cup. If he accepts it, he’ll have more capacity after he takes a break. This speaks to the need for rest and how it can recharge us. This card is telling us that we need a break. We need to rest for a bit. We’re getting to a point where we will be depleted of our energy, and we’re not good to anyone in that state.
Our advice card is the King of Swords. The king sits on his throne, holding a sword in his right hand. He sits looking at us with his throne on a mound of earth. You can see the symbol of the butterfly above his head on his throne.
This card shows us a great king. A good man. Someone just and fair. He is a father figure. A good role model. He represents the side of us that is honorable and just. He tells us that while we need a break, we can’t just call in sick or take the day off. We have to respect our commitments. He tells us that it’s ok to take a break but to do it responsibly. It takes the fun out of it slightly, but he’s right. If we were to take the day off or not go to work, we set in motion a string of events that cascades and causes trouble for our co-workers. So a better way would be to take it slow today. Take breaks when you can. Find ways to re-charge yourself to get through today. The weekend is coming soon, and there’ll be a chance to rest soon enough.

Our takeaway card today is the Wheel of Fortune. This card is interesting. There is so much going on in this card. First, we have a wheel at the center of the cad. The wheel contains letters and symbols. At the four cardinal directions of north, south, east, and west are letters that spell the word ‘TORA,’ which is thought to represent the word ’Torah,’ which means law. But it could also be ‘ROTA,’ Latin for wheel. Between those letters are other symbols, which I’m not sure what their meaning is. In the center of the wheel are the alchemical symbols for mercury, sulfur, water, and salt—the building blocks of life. Moving out from the wheel, we see three creatures surrounding it. A the top, we see a sphinx holding a sword. To the left of the wheel is a snake headed downwards. This indicates the life force plunging into the underworld. The last creature nearest the wheel is the god Anubis, who welcomes souls to the underworld. In the four corners, winged creatures are associated with the four fixed signs of the zodiac. An angel for Aquarius, the eagle represents Scorpio, the Lion is Leo, and the bull signifies Taurus.
This card reminds us that the wheel of life is constantly spinning. It’s in a constant state of transformation. This card also shows us that something is happening. That something is set into motion, and we must wait for it to come to fruition. It’s really out of our hands at this point. We’ve done as much as we can. It’s now up to the fates to take our actions and energies and turn them into what we hope for. Generally, this is considered a good card, so don’t worry. Things tend to work out as they should. And if it doesn’t, that’s the wheel’s way of telling us it wasn’t meant to be.
However, as a takeaway card, this card is not so much telling us what will happen but asks us to think about this concept. Think about the idea of surrendering to the wheel of fortune. To give up whatever you’ve been working on and struggling with and let the universe take it to where it needs to go. Are we able to trust the wheel of fortune? To recognize that some things are out of our control and to be ok with that. So today, think about what that means for you and how that shows up in your life. Perhaps on your lunch break today, this is something that you can think about as you recharge to make it through the rest of your day.
