Being Grounded: The Root Chakra

What is the root chakra?

Also called the "Muladhara" in Sanskrit, which means "root" or "foundation".

The concept of chakras and chakra meditation is a technique that began in ancient India, and continues on in the world to day for many people that follow the Hindu religion, but also a lot of people that don't. Meditation and chakra healing have become something widely used, and even in Western culture. Today, you may see Christians or atheists talking about meditating or opening their chakras.

Well, I'm here to tell you, there's definitely a reason for that. I started looking into chakras myself right before COVID, and I remember finding that the meditations worked. That I felt a sense of healing, and this sense of peace and calm that washed over me. It was therapeutic and it kept my energy and motivation up for the day. My purpose here is to give you a brief explanation of each chakra here based on what I have learned about it. I am indeed no professional, but I can give you some beginning information to get your wheels turning.

The root chakra is the first chakra, located at the base of the spine and is associated with the color red. The root chakra controls your sense of safety and security in the world around you. Your "fight or flight" and survival responses are all a part of your root chakra. At our very core as humans, we have certain needs that must be met in order to survive in this world, and that is what the root chakra is all about.

Because the root chakra is at the base of all chakras, it is paired with the prostate, kidney, bladder, and spine. If you have a blockage in your root chakra, you will most likely have health issues in one or all of those areas of your body. Those with a strong root chakra energy exhibit qualities of patience, success, and loyalty. They are well-grounded in the life they are in and know how to function well in society. They are also reliable and very stable to others. They might be the type of person that creates stability in the household, whether that be monetary or otherwise. If you have a strong root chakra, you know who you are right now and what your place is. You have strong survival skills and know how to make it through difficult challenges.

If you have an imbalance in the root chakra, odds are you probably feel like your whole world is falling apart. This is because the root chakra is the basic and most essential of all the chakras. We need this grounding and stabilizing energy in order to live and survive in the world around us. Without these natural instincts, we are at risk of not being able to make it even in the simplest of situations. Those that have an under-developed root chakra might also suffer from health issues very often, to the point that it affects their day-to-day life and functioning. It is so crucial when you are meditating on your chakras to make sure that your root chakra is fully open, because otherwise, you won't be able to open up your other chakras.

How Can I Balance My Root Chakra?

Find a quiet place to meditate where you are comfortable. Surround yourself with the color red, or get a chakra card and visualize the root chakra. As you inhale and exhale slowly, feel your breath going down all the way to your spine. Pay attention to the way your spine feels and the way you are grounded to the floor underneath you. Feel the downward energy as you concentrate on your root chakra. As you meditate, use the following affirmations to help guide your meditation:

I am safe and protected.

I am grounded.

I feel secure about myself and my situation in life.

I am connected to my body; I take care of my body.

I connect with nature.

Because the root chakra is grounding, it is important to meditate on how you connect with Mother Nature and the world around you.

From all things, we grow. We learn how to navigate this crazy thing that we call life, and the only ways we can learn that are through experience. The root chakra represents the journey of survival, how you connect with nature and the world around you, and how you grow from your initial experiences as a human being. It is important to be well-grounded because if you are not, you will often find it very hard to settle down and be logical about anything. Without the help of the root chakra, you really cannot tap into the energies of your other chakras. You need this grounding to help you gain an understanding of yourself and how to manage your problems and situations around you. Your instincts are the most basic and one of the most important elements for your survival, and that is EXACTLY what the root chakra seeks to amplify.

P.S.: If you are more interested in this kind of thing, I recommend you research more about it. There is a wealth of information out there about chakras.
