I know i'm not the only one who couldn't stop running on the treadmill. Do you remember pre-covid when we used to all run, everywhere we went, internally and externally? You'd see those super zen yogis or meditators and think 'i could never become one of them' or 'they must be shit poor'.
Both are probably true but I think we've all learnt, just cause we work less, drive less and reduce our time in travel and on the office/ work floor, our incomes aren't drastically cut. At least this was the experience of the Global North, prized and gifted with government supplement.
So why not use this time, this gifting of realisation and of time to practice, to practice, letting go and allowing things to be for a while, without racing to the next preoccupation or party. In this article i'm going to show you how to let go of the race, the running, so that essentially at night you can sleep with ease knowing that all is well and that you are on track to your own being, your own wellbeing- inner and outer.
1) Perhaps easier said than done, get up early! Don't worry too much about going to bed on time, if you follow this guide you will be so tired by the day's end that your favourite time will become your rest time, your bed time.
Wake up early and do your exercise. I personally love my yoga practice, because not only does it bring you deeper inside yourself, but it calms your mind, alter's your breath and exercises your body.
If your a super-active person with too much energy or hyperactivity of mind or body, try something more vigorous like 'Ashtanga or Vinyasa'. Once you've gotten rid of some of this excess energy ( over months or years) you can slowly move towards a more gentle practice. If you're a normal human i.e. without an 'A type' personality or hyperactivity you can start with something easier on the body like Hatha yoga, jogging or physical activity that brings you joy.
2) Do your breathing exercises. Again you can do yogic breath exercises or something that makes you slightly more high like 'Wimhof' or Holotropic. If you want a calming effect, google 'calming yoga breathing techniques'. If you suffer from feelings of lethargy or depression go for Wimhof or something slightly more adrenaline inducing. A dip in the freezing cold Atlantic sea or your cold shower is always a good shout here. It depends how great you want to feel for the day.
3) Start your day not with coffee. But bowel movements. Give your body time to wake up and factor in time for you to go to the toilet ( number two) in the morning. To help with this you can drink a cup of warm water, or two, sit in squatting position for a while and you should have brilliant results. A relaxed bowel is going to help your whole day go smoothly, i promise you. This is years of ancient asian wisdom, instilled since birth speaking through me here.
4) Eat yo' greens. Theres no two ways about this. The more greens you eat, the better you're going to feel, the more relaxed your bowel ( again), tummy and digestive system, and hence body will be. Take it first hand from the person who can go into angsty rage from not eating vegetables for just one day, it makes a difference, once you start to notice theres no going back. And you'll reap the benefits from it too! It means you can eat more shit food, enjoy better skin and again digestion. It means freedom to be you, to have energy and to enjoy your life. Our stomachs are our bodies no.1 brains, don't forget this!
5) Water- you've all hear enough about this. BUT did you know we absorb warm water ( another ancient asian secret to that glowing, luscious soft skin) waaaay better than cold. Cold water tenses our stomachs, causing internal tension in the body. The body therefore can't relax and absorb the water or enjoy life. So if there's any take away from today's lesson, please try to drink lukewarm drinks where ever, when ever possible. That cooled iced drink is doing you no favours, love.
6) Read, do some more breathing or relaxation exercises before bed. Turn off the phone, the laptop and even the speaker. Just be, breathe, meditate, take a warm bath or shower and allow yourself to make a ritual out of preparing for bed. Make it exciting, an enjoyable unwinding time, just for you, to release the day, be with yourself again, your body and your breath.
Enjoy the quiet before you sleep, scanning your mind and body releasing any last thoughts, the tension of your muscles and your bones as you sink into sleep, into being totally at ease in your place of sleep, your body, your breath and your mind.
Sweet dreams dear one, I hope you sleep well tonight.
