A New Life Awaits You
It could be for the best. Being uploaded to the net and living your best digital life. Maybe.
The best idea for humanity to continue itself is obvious. Everything that we know is digital nowadays. Ways we can communicate with others. Videos, chatrooms, and other such things. How we get our food ordered online along with clothes. Amongst other such wonderful things in life. Like candles, soap, and fidget toys.
Anything you can think of we can get online on a website.
Why not live fully online? We already have VR and other such means to spend time online nowadays. Why not fully upload your subconscious to the net? Our lives might be a lot easier if we existed online only. Like Futurama’s internet suits but much more thorough than that. Such as our minds and other such being uploaded to the net. We would have to have someone taking care of our bodies to keep them from dying until we’re fully intertwined. Like ‘The Matrix’ in a weird sort of fashion. Hopefully it wouldn’t be like how the movies were.
I would rather not deal with that in my day-to-day life. At any rate there would be a lot that we could do afterward. Being able to change your appearance would be so much easier once on the net. If you want to fix your body to how you prefer it, then you could. You could easily become the person that you would want to be. Be thinner, more muscular, and even fatter if you want. Say that you’re very thin and want to be thicker than you normally are. Taller as well if you’re short. Maybe shorter if you’re already tall and not happy with being tall.
Even if it’s temporary.
Think of how easy it would be to visit your loved ones. You wouldn’t have to pay for travel tickets. You could just send yourself there via email! Wouldn’t that be a wonderous thing to happen? One second, you’re at home. Dressed and packed for this trip. The next second, you’re in your relative’s home. Ready to do whatever you wish together. Anything could be possible. Literally. There’s nothing that could be out of bounds when you’re in the virtual world. You could skydive. You could go scuba diving. Hell, you might even be able to play some games in real life. Without any consequences. Maybe even without feeling any form of pain as well.
It wouldn’t really be all that fun otherwise. If you felt pain during the game, then why would you want to keep playing? I know that I wouldn’t want to keep playing if I got hurt badly. Though for some games that might be needed. Such as horror games. And I’m sure those would need some kind of sensation. But that’s something to dwell upon another time.
In this universe we might not even need food. Or medicine. Or be worried about being allergic to anything anymore. Even our pets can join us in this world. Living and since past. If we’re careful to upload memories that we have saved of the deceased pets.
Homes would be cheaper as well. Being on the net, we’ll be able to afford anything and everything we want. We’ll be able to be on the same footing as most rich folk. For a little while at the very least.
I’m sure once rich folks can have a chance; they would ruin things. They could possibly run a monopoly on getting upgrades. Making you look better than you had once you got into the networld. Such as making you look as you really had in real life. Or make you look like a celebrity that you loved so much. In fact, they could make clothes harder to get along with certain games. Keeping people out to show they’re better then ‘common’ folk.
Even if there is no real difference between a normal shirt and an expensive one. And the expensive shirt is much poorer quality than the normal shirt. Just like in real life. Where a lot of things that are ‘expensive’ are poorly made. There are so many examples that I could list but they would break the word limit that I’m putting on myself. But I’m pretty sure we’ve all seen a huge example driving around by now. And boy howdy is it the ugliest thing that I have ever laid eyes on.
Along with other terrible products that have come to be. Crocs and such. But that’s all I’m going to get into right now.
There are other problems with this. Not just who will handle people during this process. Possibly other people who will slowly be uploaded to the net. Then the duties will be slowly shifted to robots. Which will be programed to handle any and every single issue that might crop up. Technical issues that would need to be taken care of before it harms any of the billions of users. Or destroy any functionality that could be easily taken care of. Soon as it can possibly be.
Then there’s an issue of too many users at once. Possibly slowing down the network to a crawl. To avoid that I propose that users willingly archive themselves. Not suicide. Not death. Oh heavens no. Now that is a step too far for our beautiful and civilized new world. Death is much too harsh. Much, much too harsh for anyone. No. Archiving would be for folks to go to a local ‘hospital’ and entirely voluntary. You would be willing to do this to protect your fellow man. Saving billions to keep the entire network from collapsing entirely on itself. You would be a hero to your fellow man and live on as a legend that others would hear of for years.
In fact, this is only your patriotic duty to keep your nation safe and sound. It’s perfectly harmless and painless. All you would be doing is essentially fall asleep and become a record. A record for humanity to know for years or decades to come. An example to your fellow citizens of what it means to be a hero! Think of all the people that would survive and thrive because of your sacrifice!
At least, that’s how we’ll sell it.

Gosh, this is such an interesting and thought provoking story. I love the idea of being able to instantly change your appearance or zipping across to visit family.... but it sounds like quite a lonely existence. Great piece Raphael.
