What is Personal hygiene?

In simple words “Personal Hygiene is taking care of your own body”. This practice includes bathing, washing your hand, dental care; daily change your cloth, keeping your surrounding clean etc.

It is important for both health and social reason. It is the best way to protect you from getting ill and it also prevents you from spreading diseases to other people.

Importance of Personal Hygiene

If you do not maintain good personal hygiene, your body will become the storage space for germs to grow, which then cause illness and infection.

It has caused on social level also; people may avoid a person with poor personal hygiene, which may result in isolation and loneliness.

Good personal hygiene makes you feel fresh and energetic all day long. It prevents you from harmful germs and bacteria.

What does a good personal hygiene routine look like?

There are some common points we should remember and follow to maintain personal hygiene. Yet we neglect them due to lack of time and access to resources and in some cases due to lack of awareness.

Here are 5 Routines to boost up your personal hygiene:-

  • Hand washing

On starting our day, we touch many objects like furniture’s, coins, supporting rods in buses, seats, etc. Every object that we touch may carry germs, which are transferred over other parts of the body and thus it can also transfer into the body, through food. Washing your hands plays an important role to boost your hygiene. So it is essential to wash your hand;

  1. After visiting the toilet.
  2. Before eating or cooking food.
  3. After touching any objects.
  4. After meeting with someone who is sick.
  5. After being in contact with animals.
  • Dental Care

Everyone in this world must brush their teeth on daily basis. A good dental hygiene routine can help prevent issues such as gum diseases and cavities. It can also prevent bad breath. Brushing your teeth ensure the removal of plaque, which can cause tooth decay and gum diseases.

According to American Dental Association (ADA), brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes for a strong and healthy tooth. Aim to brush after you wake up and before bed.

  • Bathing

Bathing is a process of washing your body with warm or cold water to maintain personal hygiene in today’s society. It also protects our body from diseases causing microbes and other nuisances like a lice infestation.

What happen if you not take bathe for 2–3 days?

  1. Your body release odour which is uncomfortable for you and also for your close ones.
  2. After some time you start scratching your skin as bacteria and dirt start working together to cause an itching sensation.
  3. These germs and bacteria will enter your system through your hands, nose or mouth giving you the common cold or even hepatitis A.
  4. Simultaneously to prevent further damage the skin will begin producing extra layers of keratin and the outer layer of your skin will start becoming so hard and thick that you might develop a skin condition called hyperkeratosis.

Do shower every day and use a mild shampoo and mild soap to avoid harming the scalp and skin. Bathing daily prevents body odour because it kills the odour causing bacteria and makes you feel fresh.

  • Nails

Keeping your nails short and clean is the best way to maintain personal hygiene. If you do not clean your nails on the daily basis it will become taxi for germs and bacteria to enter into your mouth and make you sick.

Trim your nails on daily basis and ensure that they are not containing any dirt. The best time to cut your nails is after taking bathe because at that time your nails are a little softer and easy to trim.

  • Wear Clean Clothes

Dirty clothes are the storage room for millions of bacteria and harbor microorganisms which indirectly contact with skin can lead to a skin infection.

Wearing clean clothes every day is needed to avoid germs that can disease and body odour.

To maintain personal hygiene make sure to add Dettol Antiseptic Liquid to your laundry to kill any germs and let them dry completely because wearing wet cloths can cause itching.

Clean clothes should always be worn daily to avoid bacteria that irritate the skin. Wearing fresh clothes make you feel fresh and help to boost up your hygiene.

Teaching good habits to your kids from a young age will leave an impact for a long time but before teaching them those good habits you should inculcate the habit yourself first as children quickly imitate what elders do.

Here are some habits that you should teach your kids at a young age:

  • Teach your kids to wash their hands regularly with water and soap as kids spend most of the time playing games. During their day to day activity, they come in contact with many objects that may be clean or dirty which can make your kids sick. Therefore, it is better to teach your kids to wash their hands thoroughly especially before eating, after using the washroom, etc.
  • Teach your kids to wash vegetables and fruits before eating because vegetables or fruits can contain bacterial contamination and pesticide which after consumption cause illness and other stomach problems.
  • Aware your kids mentally as well as physically about personal hygiene and why it is important to maintain personal hygiene. Tell them an advantage so that they try to build their own hygiene habits.
  • Teach your kids to brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes.
  • Teach them some common activities such as bathing regularly, washing their hair, cutting nails, wear clean clothes and keeping their room clean.
  • Tips to make daily habit of Personal Hygiene

    1. Set reminders

    If you can’t remember your routine of personal hygiene, set a reminder in your phone or write it down on paper because when you write something on paper your mind make you complete that activity otherwise you feel guilty about yourself. It will help both you and your children to make a habit of hygiene.

    2. Be Patience

    It is hard to adopt any new habit. It will take only one to two weeks to get used to that habit so be patient and practice those routine daily one day you will see a result.

    Factors Affecting Personal Hygiene

    1. Lack of awareness

    Still, many people in this world are not aware, how important it is to maintain personal hygiene, what are their advantages and how to make a routine of personal hygiene thus it act as a barrier.

    2. Lack of Time

    In this busy life, peoples don’t have time to imply it on daily basis. Those people knew how important it is but in this busy schedule not able to imply it. These kinds of people are destroying their hygiene by knowing it. But there is still time, imply those 5 routines in your life.

    3. Lack of resources

    Lack of resources also acts as an barrier to maintain personal hygiene. This resource includes non-availability of proper products, proper sanitizers and soap, proper equipment etc.

    It directly affects your personal as well as social life.

    1. For example, if you do not wash your hand frequently you are directly transferring germs to your body which then causes illness, headache and other health-related problems.
    2. If you do not take bath for two-three days your body start to release odour, your face will become oily and greasy and you start to look untidy because of these condition other peoples and your closed ones starts to avoid you which then results in loneliness.
    3. If you do not brush your teeth daily it can lead to teeth issue and plaque buildup. It also results in tooth decay and gum diseases.
