Keto diets, high-fat diets, low-carb diets—all are becoming more and more popular due to the amazing health benefits they offer people looking to lose weight and get healthy. But, what is the keto diet? How does it work? And why should you choose it over other forms of dieting? Let’s take a look at these questions and many more as we take a look at why people choose the keto diet for their health and wellness needs!

Low-Carb diets are more than a trend

The ketogenic diet has been used therapeutically to treat epilepsy since at least 1920, and today, it's one of most popular dietary therapies used to help diabetics manage their symptoms. The keto diet also remains one of diet doctor protocols for weight loss. What makes these diets so appealing? It's not just because they help people lose weight or lower their blood sugar levels—it's how they do it.

How Low-Carb Diets Work

While there is a wide range of variation between individual keto diet plans, most revolve around (you guessed it) eating lots of fat and tiny amounts of protein and carbs. When we eat more carbs than our bodies can process in one sitting, most of what we don't use gets stored as body fat. This means that after eating carbs, your body has to work harder to burn stored fat instead of burning that new donut hole you've been eyeing. A lower-carb intake also typically translates into reduced hunger levels—which may help with weight loss in and of itself. Our bodies are incredibly adaptive, says Dr. Berg. They will adjust to use whatever carbohydrate source is available. Still not sold?

A variety of health benefits from following a low-carb diet

First and foremost, following a keto diet can help you lose weight—and that’s an obvious benefit if you have any hope of leading a healthy life. But beyond dropping extra pounds, research shows low-carb diets can also reduce your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, may help control blood sugar in people with diabetes and might even aid in normalizing bowel movements. One study found that following a keto diet could even improve memory and cognitive function in older adults.

Talk about some serious health perks! If those reasons aren't enough to convince you to give it a try, maybe these will: A study published in February 2018 found that when participants followed a very-low carbohydrate ketogenic diet for eight weeks they lost more than twice as much fat as those who followed a low-fat diet. Other studies have shown similar results. In fact, according to research published by Harvard Health Publishing , 70 percent of all overweight or obese individuals who follow high-protein diets such as Atkins or Paleo report having at least one symptom of metabolic syndrome (which includes high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and insulin resistance). What's more?

Side Effects of Low Carb Diets

Some people experience fatigue and constipation, two relatively harmless side effects of low-carb diets. Some, however, report more serious side effects like headaches, sleeplessness and muscle cramps. The reason is not entirely clear. It could be that someone who has been eating junk food all their life needs to give their body some time to adjust to a healthy diet or it could be an issue with water or electrolyte balance or even dehydration.

The Ketogenic Lifestyle

What is a Ketogenic diet? What are keto meals and why people choose to be on them. Well, there are three main reasons that someone may choose to follow an eating plan that’s low in carbohydrates and high in fat (the macronutrients). The first reason is health-related, many keto diets have been shown to help you lose weight because they make you feel fuller with fewer calories.

Ketogenic Foods for Healthy Living

You want to experience good health, and one of the best ways to ensure it is by eating healthy foods. Many people on keto diets believe that keto recipes are a good way to start living healthier. This is because these types of foods focus on providing optimal nutritional value, thereby improving your health over time. They’re also considered by many experts as being high in nutrients, low in carbs, and packed with antioxidants and other beneficial vitamins.

Common Excuses and Misconceptions about Low Carb Diets

If you’re like many people out there, when you hear low carb diet your immediate reaction is to try and find an excuse not to do it. It’s understandable, too: After all, who likes being told what they can and can’t eat? But before you dismiss low carb diets entirely, consider these two common excuses...
