The military sleep method dates back decades ago, and even though there is no published content on its origin, a book published in 1981 ad titled; Relax & Win: Championship Performance in Whatever You Do, written by Lloyd Winter writes about this sleep method.

The book describes how combat pilots were trained during World War 2, hence the origin of the military name. Lloyd Winter, who happened to be a college track coach went on to use the sleep method to train his athletes including many Olympic athletes. The technique helped these athletes wake up refreshed and ready to face challenges.

How Does the Military Sleep Technique Work?

The steps to be taken with this technique are expected to send anyone to sleep under 120 minutes and they go as follows;

Step 1: Lie on your back with your eyes closed and then relax the muscles in your face including muscles connected to the tongue, eye sockets, and jaw, while keeping your forehead straight.

Step 2: Next, drop your shoulders as low as possible, which will help release the tension in and around your neck. This should be followed by relaxing the muscles in one hand from the shoulder to the fingers moving to the other arm and repeating the process. If necessary tense the arm muscles first before relaxing them.

Step 3: Breathe in and out and relax your chest

Step 4: Relax the muscles in your legs, especially from the thigh down to the calves and the ankles, feet, and toes

Step 5: Visualize images that can help you clear your mind and sweep away intruding thoughts. For instance, picture yourself in a canoe inside a blue lake and clear skies. Anytime a new thought comes into your mind, say to yourself “Stop thinking!”

Repeating the last step should help you calm your nerves until you start falling asleep.
