It's Time to Give Up: The Hidden Power of Letting Go
If you are looking for a book about letting go, No need to look further. Just read this. Knowing the right time to give up is an art, not a science, maybe its both, maybe its not. Let's explore.

We’ve all heard the phrase “never give up” so many times that it’s almost tattooed in our minds. From school assemblies to motivational quotes or rather never let it go quotes on Instagram, in books about letting go, the idea of pushing through no matter what has been glorified. But let’s be honest for a minute: Why is it that no one teaches us us the other side of the coin?
What if part of winning in life is knowing when to GIVE UP?
That’s the side I want to talk about today. The unpopular side. The one people rarely admit, even when deep down they feel it—sometimes, giving up is the smartest thing you can do. TRUST ME.
The Trap of Hope
I’ve been there, stuck in the same cycle for years, hoping things will magically get better. Maybe you know the feeling too. You're talented. You can sing, write, act, code, or whatever it is you do—but talent alone doesn’t guarantee success. You keep showing up, auditioning, applying, hustling. Yet nothing clicks. The gigs don’t come. The job offers don’t land. Your name doesn’t grow. Your inbox stays dry. Even here, on vocal, its your third year but the stats are still lagging. Maybe nature is giving you signs, let go and let God.
But because we’ve been taught that quitting is failure, we keep going. We press on until we’re drained, bitter, and lost in a fog of self-doubt.
So… When Is the Right Time to Give Up?
Here’s what I’ve realized: not every dream is meant to last forever. Not every love story will end in marriage. Not every path will lead you to the destination you want. And that’s okay.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are some signs that it might be time to reconsider your path:
- When chasing the dream makes you feel miserable every single day
- When you’ve lost genuine interest in what you’re doing
- When you're only holding on because you're afraid of what people will think
- When you don’t have the resources to move forward, no matter how much you wish you did
- When the failure is making you hate yourself
- When you’ve given it time, but progress still looks like a myth
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying walk away the moment things get hard. Growth takes discomfort. But there’s a difference between hard work and a dead end.
The Problem with “Never Give Up”
Winners never quit, and quitters never win.
Yeah, that quote by Vince Lombardi has lived rent-free in our heads forever. But let’s challenge that for a second. Is it always true?
Nelson Mandela said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” True. But what if, just maybe, some things are impossible for you at a certain stage of life? Or maybe they’re just not meant for you at all?
Knowing when something is no longer working isn’t weakness—it’s wisdom. It means you’re self-aware enough to pivot, to switch strategy, and to preserve your peace.
Let’s Talk Timelines : The Right time to Give Up
One of the best ways to avoid getting stuck in the endless loop of "trying" is to set a timeline. Be intentional. Don’t just grind blindly.
Let’s say you graduated in 2024 and you're chasing a job in a specific field. Give yourself, say, 5 or 7 years to try. And if nothing solid comes by then? It's okay to consider Plan B, C, or even Z. That doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re choosing a new route to reach the same or an even better destination.
Even Thomas Edison, the king of persistence, tried thousands of things before stumbling upon the right one. So while his quotes about never giving up sound inspiring, the truth is—he gave up on many wrong things before finding the right one. That’s what made him successful.
So why should you keep doing just one thing when it clearly isn’t working?
Get Clear on What You Really Want
Here’s another truth bomb: most people don’t want a dream job—they want the life that job will give them. We want comfort. Freedom. Money. Impact. Happiness.
If that’s the case, why get stuck thinking there’s only one way to achieve it?
Want to be wealthy? There are a thousand ways to get there. Want to be fulfilled? Same thing. You don’t have to stay stuck trying to force one specific idea to work. Explore alternatives. Try new doors. Sometimes, the success you're looking for is just one pivot away.
Don’t Romanticize the Struggle
The idea of suffering for your dream sounds noble—but is it really worth it if it makes you hate your life?

Don’t let your dreams become your prison.
Instead, make sure you’re chasing goals that actually add value to your life, not take away from it. Life is already tough enough—why stay in a toxic situation just to feel like you didn’t give up?
So… Should You Give Up?
That decision is personal, and honestly, I don’t have a perfect answer for you. But I do believe this: the moment you feel like a dream is draining your soul, it’s time to pause and reflect. Not to quit immediately—but to reassess.
What are you really trying to achieve? Is there another way to get there? Could a new path serve you better?
Remember, success doesn’t always look like never giving up. Sometimes, it looks like letting go of what’s not working and finding a new way to win.

This article might not apply to every situation. Some dreams are worth holding onto for life. Some people will stick with one vision for decades, and eventually make it. But even then, they make smart choices along the way. They adapt. They pivot. They grow.
So, if you’re at that crossroads right now, I want you to know: it’s not weak to question your path. It’s not failure to change direction. You’re allowed to want peace. You’re allowed to try something new.
Just don’t let anyone—including the old version of yourself—trap you in a life that no longer serves you.
Let’s talk. Have you ever had to give up on something that mattered to you? What did that feel like? And what happened after? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Become a subscriber for more of these thought provoking pieces.
