Summer is halfway to its end and yet some household air conditioning Wollongong units started to malfunction. While there are numerous reasons as to why your system might not be performing well, there could also be small issues that can easily be fixed without the help of your local HVAC professional.

There are times that a technician's visit isn't necessarily needed as you can fix the problem easily and without causing you to spend money. Now, if your HVAC is not working properly and you're worried if you have to either call an electrician or not, here are six things that you should always check before doing so.

Check your air filter

Most often than not, every AC unit's poor performance is caused by a dirty or clogged air filter. One of the telltale signs is when your AC unit is not cooling or heating so well. Whilst air filters can regularly be changed or cleaned, they come with proper procedures to avoid permanent damage to the unit. HVAC filters are designed to trap dirt and dust so it won't directly clog up your unit and damage it permanently.

Inspect your vents

If you're experiencing inconsistent temperatures in different areas of the room that you are either heating or cooling, the issue might be with your vents. It could either be blocked or dirty. Just make sure that you always leave your vents open. Now, vents can also accumulate dust over time and should be cleaned every now and then.

Replace your thermostat's battery

Some thermostats are still battery-operated and those batteries can be charged. While they are rechargeable, there could be instances that you have to replace them too. Most especially, if they have been used for so long. Every now and then, your thermostat could be the culprit behind your heating or cooling problems. So if you find your thermostat not lit, try checking it first and don't just immediately call a technician.

Clear the area around your outdoor HVAC unit

Every HVAC has an outdoor unit that is not very hard to spot because of its size. This outdoor unit is the main site of airflow that runs into your indoor unit and provides either heat or cool air in your home. Since outdoor units are located outside, various kinds of debris such as leaves, branches, snow, dust, dirt, and others can block this unit which will eventually lead to poor airflow. One thing that you must do is to maintain a 3 feet radius of a dirt-free area around your outdoor unit.

Pay attention to strange noises coming from your unit

One of the most basic steps that you should do if you own an HVAC unit is to pay attention to strange noises coming from it. If you are hearing weird sounds in your unit that is not usually how it sounds, immediately turn off your system. And then if you know how to open your unit, check for any obstruction or clogging that could be the root cause of that strange noise. But if you are not seeing visible obstructions, it is better to call an HVAC professional.

Observe for any leaks around your unit

Any HVAC unit should not have any leaks around it. But if you see any form of water or liquid around your unit, you should immediately try to locate where it is coming from. If you see unnecessary holes and aggressive dripping, it could be an overflow, a clogged line or other reasons. Turn off your unit and then call your local AC technician.
