10 Harsh Truths I Wish Someone Told Me At 20

Life Doesn't come with warning-but maybe this will help.

By ShaheerPublished 6 months ago 3 min read

If I could sit across from my 20-year-old self today, I wouldn’t sugarcoat it. I wouldn’t tell them life is always fair or that everything works out in the end. That would be a lie.

Instead, I’d give them the truth. The kind of truth that hurts a little, but saves a lot.

Here are 10 harsh truths I wish someone told me when I was just getting started in life.

1. Most People Only Care When They Need Something

The world is full of people who will clap when you’re winning, but disappear when you’re struggling. Don’t mistake attention for loyalty. Give to others, yes—but don’t bleed for those who wouldn’t even hand you a bandage.

2. Being Busy Doesn’t Mean You’re Progressing

I used to wear busyness like a badge of honor. But I was just spinning my wheels. Productivity isn’t about being constantly in motion—it’s about moving in the right direction. Hustle means nothing if you're chasing the wrong goals.

3. No One Is Coming to Save You

This was one of the toughest pills to swallow. Waiting for someone to notice your pain, help you out, or guide you to the right path? It doesn’t always happen. You have to be your own hero, even if you’re scared. Especially when you’re scared.

4. You’ll Waste Time on People Who Don’t Deserve You

You’ll give your heart to the wrong people. It’ll hurt. You’ll feel foolish. But that’s part of the journey. Don’t carry shame for loving fully. Just learn when it’s time to stop watering dead plants.

5. Failure Isn’t the End—It’s the Beginning

At 20, I was terrified of failing. I thought messing up meant I wasn’t good enough. But failure has taught me more than any success ever did. You don’t grow when everything goes right—you grow when you figure out how to stand back up.

6. Not Everyone Will Like You, Even If You’re the Nicest Person on Earth

You could be kind, generous, helpful—and someone will still find a reason to dislike you. That’s their issue, not yours. Stop trying to win everyone over. Be real. The right people will find you.

7. Being Alone Is Better Than Being Half-Loved

It’s better to sit alone with your own peace than to lie next to someone who doesn’t value your worth. Don’t chase love that hurts. Don’t beg for attention. What’s meant for you will never have to be forced.

8. Consistency Being Alone Is Better Than Being Half-Loved

The world is full of talented people who never make it because they didn’t stay consistent. You don’t have to be the best—you just have to be the one who doesn’t give up. Keep showing up. Even on the hard days.

9. Your Parents Are Just People Too

We grow up believing our parents have all the answers. But they were just trying to figure life out too, often with less guidance than you have now. This realization helps you understand them better, forgive them deeper, and break the cycles they couldn’t.

10. Time Is Your Most Precious Currency

At 20, it feels like you have forever. But one day, you’ll wake up and wonder where the years went. Spend your time wisely—on people who matter, on things that fulfill you, and on moments that make you feel alive. Don’t give it away like it’s free.

A Final Thought:

Life doesn’t always give you gentle lessons. Sometimes, it breaks you just to rebuild you stronger. You will cry. You will feel lost. You will question everything.

But you will also rise.

You will become someone your younger self would be proud of. Someone wiser. Braver. Softer in the right places and tougher in the others. These truths are heavy, but they are yours now.

Use them.

And if you're reading this at 20—or 30, or 45—know this: it's not too late to change your path. It's not too late to let go of what’s hurting you. It’s not too late to start becoming who you were meant to be.

The truth might hurt, but it can also set you free.
