YouTube

My Experience

By Samantha DavilaPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

Ah, YouTube! A place that was mostly known for cat videos back in 2005 but has grown to be one of the biggest online video sharing platforms in the world.

Being part of a generation that has known about, and used, YouTube for the majority of my life, it's not a surprise that the idea of "I could do this too," has popped into my head once or twice while watching my favorite YouTubers.

Years ago, when I was innocent and naive, I wanted to make gaming videos with a passion! I got the best screen recording app I could find and started playing Minecraft with my cousins. Of course, those videos never went up as I had no idea how to upload a video and I was afraid of getting into trouble since I hadn't asked for my mom's permission. Years later the drive to creative things returned, I started filming whenever my friends/family and I did anything we considered fun, whether it be going on a trip, or to the fair, or even running an errand!

(Shameless self plug, expect another one soon)

Recording interesting and amusing was always a passion of mine, the difficult part came when editing rolled around. Sitting myself down to mold 20+ minutes of content into a less than five minute video on my iPhone 6s with iMovie was such a big hurdle, but I find that the only difficult part is starting to edit. Once I get into it and am completely engulfed in my project nothing can stop me from finishing it.

My passion for piecing together video clips started to die down, mainly because I didn't want to be stuck seeing my best moments from behind my phone, also because I have way too many projects that I have not even touched yet. My interest for another aspect of YouTube came about, voice acting. Yes I'm one of those! I absolutely fell in love with the comic dub and voice acting community, along with the aspects which come with the art itself. I wanted to be a part of this, I needed to be a part of this, so I gathered up some friends and they were both crazy enough to help me. The first video we made featured the voices of my friend and I, and my editing.

I was so incredibly proud of this! We spend about a week working on a 10 second video and everything was so worth it! I am still really proud of myself for even putting myself out there like that. I took the backseat in the next comic dub and my other friend took over my character as I focusing on everything behind the scenes.

This video made me even prouder! 48 seconds! I exchanged countless messages with my team and with the artist for 48 seconds of content, and oh how worth it it was in the end. I had found my passion. Voice acting and directing. Those are the things I love doing, no matter if I'm good at it or not!

Of course, as life would have it, personal issues struck my team. We haven't produced a video in almost a year. I haven't produced a video in almost a year. It's sad, really. But hey, if there are any aspiring voice actors out there who are reading this reach out to me on Instagram or Tumblr! (Instagram @we.dub.things.unprofessionally and Tumblr @we-dub-things-unprofessionally)

Anyway! If you made it this far into this "article" then thank you, I don't really know what I'm doing here so your reading this really helps. I appreciate you.

Have a good day and eat breakfast!
