I know because I'm you. You've spent most of your adult life working various jobs. And often you've stayed on a lot longer than you should. You've powered through long nights and weekends. You've missed dates, first steps, and soccer games. For what? Job security? A 401k? Do you really want to spend the next 50+ years of your life working for a company so you can retire and finally start to enjoy yourself? I want to remind you that you may need a job, but you don't necessarily need this one.
If I was to ask you if you'd give your life for your company, what would you say? You'd give me a, "hell no!" But, odds are, you're already doing that. You're sacrificing your most valuable asset. You're sacrificing your time. So when you tell me that you wouldn't give your life for your company, or your work, why do you turn around and do just that?
It's because you're scared. You've put in time and effort at this job, and you're afraid that if you quit, you'll have to start over. You'll make less money. Your lifestyle will change. Maybe you're unsure of how you're going to pay your bills. Or maybe you're afraid that you can't find anything better. You're not smart enough. Or you aren't charismatic enough. There are a thousand excuses you can give yourself to stay at a job that isn't fulfilling you. But those excuses don't mean anything in the face of what should be the most important factor: Your happiness.
Your happiness should be one of your highest priorities. So if you aren't happy at your job, you need to find a different job. I'm not saying that you should quit today. I'm saying that life is too short to be spending it doing shit you hate doing. Start making a plan. Pick up a side job and save up enough money for your bills for a few months. Start looking for jobs now. Start learning a new skill that's in demand. Do one of those things, or do all of them. Do something like that, then quit. If you fail to account for things in your life changing when you try to switch jobs or careers, you may only put yourself in a worse situation than you're already in.
With all of that being said, I want to help you. You can pick up extra shifts in your free time using an app called InstaWork. I've seen gigs in my area for general labor, warehouse work, forklift drivers, counter staff, and event setup. The pay ranges I've seen vary from around $14-$20. This could be dependent on your location though. If you sign up using my link, you earn an extra $150 dollars when you complete 3 shifts! (This promotion is over, unfortunately!)
If you're looking for a more permanent position, you could also sign up for a site called FlexJobs. FlexJobs posts legitimate work-from-home positions and other flexible options that are fully vetted. No more getting scammed by fake "opportunities."
If you're not quite ready for a new job and would like to learn a new skill I would highly suggest going through Udemy or SkillShare. You could even go on YouTube and learn something new! Don't underestimate the power of online learning. You don't necessarily need to go back and get a formal education to succeed down a different path. Don't let anybody tell you that you need to go get a different degree to change directions. (Unless you're planning on becoming a doctor, please get a formal education for that!)
I would love to share any other resources and tools that I come across. If you have any questions or would like to reach out, my Instagram is @heytherezac. I would be happy to hear from you!
I sincerely hope that you follow your dreams and wish you the greatest success.
P.S. Some of the links that I share are affiliate links. This doesn't change my desire to help you succeed, and they certainly don't cost you anything extra when you sign up using one of my links. Where applicable, I will tell you the benefits of signing up using one of my links.
-Zac
