Why me?

Finding Faith and Strength Through Life’s Trials

By Taiba TahirPublished about a year ago 2 min read

Why Me?

Let me be honest here. I have asked this question countless times. And yet, I don’t know why, but every time, I have received an answer. I endured repeated pain, betrayal, and manipulation. I found myself trapped in a state where I neither wished to breathe nor desired to die. I faced hopelessness, became a source of disappointment, and witnessed my own downfall as my academic excellence slipped away. I watched my hair fall to the extent that I had to cover my head at all times. I saw my mental health deteriorate day by day, and I felt myself losing my grip on reality in front of others. On several occasions, I was overwhelmed by an instinct to end my life. These were some of the most vulnerable and agonizing moments one could experience.

In each of these moments, I found myself unknowingly questioning, "Why me?" And yet, without fail, I would come across a verse or hear words that seemed divinely timed to answer me.

1. Trials Are a Test of Faith

Allah tests His servants to strengthen their faith and distinguish the righteous from others:

"Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe,' and they will not be tested? But We have certainly tested those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars." (Surah Al-Ankabut, 29:2-3)

2. Hardship Is Temporary

Allah reminds believers that difficulties are fleeting and will eventually give way to ease:

"For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease." (Surah Ash-Sharh, 94:6-7)

3. Allah Does Not Burden Beyond Capacity

Allah assures us that no soul is burdened beyond its ability to endure:

"Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:286)

4. Trials Purify and Elevate

Trials serve to cleanse a believer's sins and elevate their rank in the Hereafter:

"And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.' Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is they who are rightly guided." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:155-157)

5. Allah’s Wisdom Is Beyond Our Understanding

Sometimes, we may not understand the wisdom behind what happens to us, but Allah’s knowledge is all-encompassing:

"Perhaps you dislike a thing, and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing, and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:216)

Reflection

Reading these verses brought a profound sense of peace to my heart. My soul, once restless, found tranquility, and my mind followed suit. I realized that all these hardships and trials are merely tests, and they are temporary. I am being tested because I am a believer, and Allah wants me to remain close to Him. He wants me to call upon Him and remember Him in every circumstance. I am blessed. In fact, I am grateful for those difficult times because they brought me closer to my Creator. So instead of questioning, “Why me?” I now ask myself, “How can I grow from this?” Believe me, this shift in perspective will transform your life.
