India, with its sun-kissed beaches, snow-capped mountains, ancient temples, and crowded cities, has long been a tourist magnet. But there is an ugly reality behind its garish colors and warmth.
Armed robberies and loot, on the one hand, and deadly hoaxes and police insensitivity, on the other, are on the rise. Is India still a safe tourist destination? Has this tourist haven become a risk area?
India has also witnessed, in recent times, a surprising increase in foreign and domestic tourist attacks. Even as the country remains one of the most desired destinations on every travel wish-list,horrific attacks, rapes, and swindles are frightening away would-be tourists.
A Russian national, 34 years old, was lynched by locals out of revenge for an altercation with locals. The lynching was recorded on video, became viral, and created an outrage.
Goa, beaches, and night life have also witnessed growing attacks on foreigners, including single tourists.
A tourist was attacked at Paharganj (a popular area for backpackers) in daylight. She was robbed of her passport, cash, and cell phone by thieves and left traumatized.
