The Name of the Lord is a Place of Safety

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” – Proverbs 18:10

In every generation, humanity has searched for security. From building walls and armies to creating emergency funds and insurance plans, people instinctively seek safety. We want to be protected from danger, loss, rejection, and uncertainty.

Yet in the Bible, God offers us a radically different picture of security. Not found in walls or wealth, but in a name. “The name of the Lord is a strong tower…”

What does this mean? How can a name be a refuge?

1. The Name of the Lord: More Than a Title

In biblical thought, a name is not just a tag—it reveals character, authority, and presence.

Yahweh (Jehovah) – the self-existent, eternal God.

El Shaddai – God Almighty.

Jehovah Jireh – The Lord who provides.

Jehovah Shalom – The Lord is peace.

Emmanuel – God with us.

When we speak or run to the name of the Lord, we are not just saying a word—we are clinging to the reality of who God is. His name carries the full weight of His identity, His covenant, and His unchanging nature.

To say "The name of the Lord is a strong tower" is to say: "Who God is—His love, His justice, His power, His faithfulness—is our ultimate refuge."

2. A Strong Tower: A Symbol of Unshakeable Refuge

In ancient cities, a tower was the most secure place. Built on high ground with thick stone walls, it was a place to:

Gain perspective (vision from above),

Defend against attacks,

Find rest from pursuit,

Signal hope to others.

God’s name is like that tower.

When fear strikes…

When accusations rise…

When anxiety presses in…

When enemies surround…

The righteous can run to God and find safety. Not theoretical safety, but real peace, real help, real defense.

Psalm 91 echoes this:

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

3. The Righteous Run to It: Faith in Action

The verse says “the righteous run to it…” Running is urgent. It’s decisive. It’s personal.

This implies that:

We recognize danger.

We know where safety is.

We make a conscious choice to turn to God.

Running to God is an act of faith. It means trusting in His character when we don’t understand His ways. It means choosing prayer over panic. It means placing our hope in the eternal instead of the temporary.

The unrighteous might run to other things—money, influence, escape, distractions. But the righteous run to the Lord.

4. They Are Safe: True Safety in a Dangerous World

Notice the result: “…and are safe.”

Not “might be.”

Not “feel safe.”

But “are safe.”

This safety does not mean the absence of suffering, but the presence of security even in suffering.

Daniel was in the lion’s den, but he was safe.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were in the fire, but they were safe.

Paul was shipwrecked, beaten, imprisoned—but he declared, “Nothing can separate us from the love of God.”

Safety in God is not the avoidance of trouble—it is the confidence that no trouble can overpower the One we trust.

5. Application: Living in the Strong Tower

So how do we practically run to the name of the Lord?

Through Prayer – Call upon His name. In the moment of fear, whisper “Jesus.” He is near.

Through Worship – Sing of His greatness. Praise invites His presence and reminds your soul of His strength.

Through Scripture – Meditate on the names and promises of God. His Word builds our trust.

Through Fellowship – Surround yourself with others who know the name of the Lord. Community strengthens faith.

Conclusion: Our Ultimate Refuge

In a shaking world, we are not without shelter. We have a strong tower. We have a name that never fails.

The name of the Lord is a place of safety.

Run to Him. Trust in Him. Dwell in His presence.

“Some trust in chariots, some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” – Psalm 20:7

This is really interesting. You mention how people search for security in various ways, like building walls. But God offers security in His name. I wonder how we can better internalize this idea in our daily lives. And what specific situations have you seen where relying on God's name brought true safety? It's cool how a name can carry so much. The examples of different names of God show His many aspects. Do you think understanding these names helps us connect with God on a deeper level when we're in need of refuge?
