The Future of Urban Development.

Saudi Arabia, a country known for its deserts and oil, is embarking on an extraordinary endeavor that seems straight out of a science fiction movie. It aims to build a futuristic city unlike any other, stretching 170 kilometres in a straight line. With an impressive height of 500 meters, surpassing the iconic Eiffel Tower, this city will be a marvel to behold.

The city's design is truly unique, with a width of only 200 meters and enormous mirror panels adorning its exterior on both sides. The developers envision a city abundant in greenery and futuristic technologies, showcasing Saudi Arabia's commitment to diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on oil exports. The estimated cost of this ambitious project is a staggering 1 trillion dollars, with a targeted completion date of 2045.

When we think of Saudi Arabia, we often associate it with its vast deserts and its role as a major oil exporter. However, the country is geographically diverse, featuring savannas, mountains, and even volcanic fields, with over 2,000 dormant and active volcanoes. Despite its oil-dependent economy, Saudi Arabia aims to follow in the footsteps of other countries in the region, such as the United Arab Emirates, by diversifying its economy through initiatives like Saudi Vision 2030.

One of the key components of Saudi Vision 2030 is the development of NEOM, a smart city located in the northwestern part of Saudi Arabia, along the Red Sea. NEOM is not just a single city; rather, it represents an entire region encompassing various cities, resorts, and other developments. Spanning approximately 26,500 square kilometres, NEOM's strategic location offers a more moderate climate compared to the scorching desert heat found elsewhere in Saudi Arabia.

The name "NEOM" itself holds significance, as it combines the prefix "Neo" meaning "New" in Ancient Greek, and "M" representing both the prince's name, Mohammed bin Salman, and the Arabic word "Mustaqbal" meaning "Future." NEOM aims to be a new city that embodies the future of urban living.

The developers have unveiled plans for ten distinct projects within NEOM, with four already announced. One of these projects, "The Line," stands out as the most remarkable. Spanning 170 kilometers, The Line will be situated between two skyscrapers towering 500 meters high. These linear buildings will feature mirrored exteriors, a concept inspired by the principles of Arcology—a fusion of architecture and ecology that emphasises efficient and environmentally friendly urban planning.

The Line's design may evoke memories of similar ideas proposed in the past, but lack of resources hindered their realisation. However, with advancements in technology and a commitment to sustainability, Saudi Arabia aims to make The Line a reality. The city will occupy a mere 34 square kilometers, yet accommodate a staggering population of 9 million people, equivalent to the size of New York City. The vertical layout of The Line will enable multi-dimensional movement, incorporating the concept of Zero Gravity Urbanism, where people can traverse upwards, downwards, and sideways.

To ensure environmental sustainability, NEOM plans to rely on 100% renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydrogen. The city's infrastructure will prioritise pedestrian-friendly spaces, green parks, and eliminate the need for roads and cars. High-speed transportation systems will connect The Line's endpoints, making travel from one end to the other a swift 20-minute journey.
