What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is the process of promoting someone else's products or services by leveraging your site's content, traffic, and brand. It typically works through one form of an affiliate marketing product: an affiliate network. You can read more about these below.
You may have seen that on some blogs there are small ads on the side (or sometimes in a sidebar) that don't seem like they have anything to do with the blog post you're reading. These are most likely advertisements for companies like Amazon or Target who pay bloggers a commission if you purchase their product after clicking their link on the blogger's website! Pretty neat, huh?

Different types of affiliates
As a beginner, you will want to start off working with retailers like Amazon or Walmart, but many of these programs have started including bloggers or influencers as affiliate partners. It is important that you know the difference between the different types of affiliates before getting into this line of work. Some will work for commissions on purchases made through their website or social media posts and others may provide products for free in exchange for an honest review on their blog. You should also take note of all guidelines and policies that are in place, as each company differs slightly from one another in how they manage this aspect.
There are many types of affiliates out there and it can be difficult to figure out which type best suits your needs.

What does an affiliate do?
Affiliates are individuals who use online marketing tools like blogs, websites, and videos to drive traffic back to partner offers. When a visitor clicks through the affiliate link and makes a purchase, the affiliate gets paid a commission on the sale. In this role, it’s important that you have your own audience so that you can build trust among your visitors who may be interested in following your recommendations. You'll want to get them onto your email list and make sure they're aware of all the free resources available from your site or blog. It will take time for these relationships to grow, but it's worth every minute when you see things start to take off!

Three sources of income
1. Commissions- When a customer clicks an affiliate link and buys the product from the merchant site, the merchant will pay a commission (usually in the form of cash or credit) to the affiliate. This can range anywhere from 10% - 75%.
2. Cost per click- You make money anytime someone clicks on your affiliate link and goes to your referring web page, even if they don't buy anything at that time. Usually, this commission starts out small and increases as your referral continues clicking on links in other articles you send them.

Finding products
I recommend finding products that you're genuinely interested in, that offer great value, and have a large customer base. Look for popular blogs and books that you can promote and other people who are successful with affiliate marketing by seeing what they're promoting. For example, this top influencer is promoting this weight loss product right now and has a lot of followers so it might be worth your time!

Tips for success
Set up a website about the niche your looking to promote. Once you do this, reach out to as many companies in that niche as possible. If they are not currently using affiliate marketing, offer your help in creating and implementing their program. The more websites and offers you can participate in, the better chance of earning more money through commissions and sales.

Types of ads and tracking software
Many affiliate marketers use Pay-Per-Click ads. Pay-Per-Click ads are the most cost effective because there is no initial investment, and if you click on an ad then that company pays the amount that was agreed upon before the click happened. Google AdWords has become a popular way of advertising online because it has billions of search results every day and they are paying more than any other internet search engine.
