Shed away his ego

Anger loosened its grip

Third step

Bitterness drained from his veins

~~~⏬~~~
Fourth step
Jealousy no longer followed him
~~~⏬~~~

Fifth step
D
     O
          W
               N

Greed fell from his hands

~~~⏬~~~
Sixth step
D
     O
          W
               N
Judgement stopped clouding his eyes
~~~⏬~~~

Seventh step
D
     O
          W
               N

Every grudge was cast aside

~~~⏬~~~
Eighth step
D
     O
          W
               N
Thirst for revenge quenched
~~~⏬~~~

Ninth step
D
     O
          W
               N

Hatred disappeared entirely

~~~⏬~~~
Tenth step
D
     O
          W
He left his body behind
~~~⏬~~~

Free from the weight of Earth

Untouched by its noise

He returned to what he was

Before the world taught him otherwise

    Well done, Dharrsheena, such a cool structure for this poem. Very impactful work and so original!

    What a great concept. I dig your use of structure here and of blank space on the page. Great layout. The poetry feels sad but also freeing. Especially with the last step this reads to me like a poem about dying, (or atleast dying to the self,) but not in an entirely tragic or scary way. There’s sort of a beauty to it, and especially to the idea of renouncing some of the toxic things that life tells us to cling to— like cutting off circulation to diseased thoughts and letting them die out.

    This was stunning and such powerful imagery in so few words

    This strikes me as a fascinating meditation on the Buddhist concept of viraga, or renunciation of, and liberating detachment from, worldly things. It is formally daring and full of food for thought! Well done, Dharrsheena!

    The words are simple. But the message is meaningful and deep. You did an excellent job with this!

    This is actually beautiful. I can read it as healing, and I can read it as death, and either way, I feel... I dont know, soothed? Something more than soothed though.

    This is a wonderful meditative poem, Dharrsheena! I need to walk down those steps! Loved it!

    Girl! You couldn't have timed this better! I can't even tell you how much I love it! 🧡 I've been recently doing the work and trying to unlearn every made-up, nonsensical rule the world has taught me that I subconsciously follow (that most of the time doesn't even make sense). And your final lines "He returned to what he was / Before the world taught him otherwise" hit the mark just perfectly!
