I was really not prepared for the social side of ship life on my 2nd contract and with the easier life and more free time like most of the team I spent almost every night in the bar. The first few months of the contract had a great team and everyone got on great, the problem is that inevitably your friends leave and you don't get on as well with their replacements.

Canada day carnage and videog side hustles!
I did not know too much about Canada before ships, I'd briefly visited Vancouver on the Coral but it had been a tunraround port so we'd had little time to explore. The little I knew was the typical stereotypes that they all loved hockey, everyone lived in igloos and had to hide from polar bears, and that they were a little bit like Americans except they were unbelievably polite.

A new port on our Asian run was Nha Trang, Vietnam which is a coastal resort city in southern Vietnam where one of the big attractions is to take the cable car over to Hon Tre Island. Although there was still a million motorbikes everyone the pace Nha Trang seemed much more relaxed than the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City

A world cruise is a hallowed position to be in onboard a cruise ship and not many are lucky enough to do one especially when your only a two person department on each ship. I'd made a good enough impression on management on my first contract and as I'd learn you need a decent junior you can count on when your the senior.

Island hopping in Langkawi
One of the joys of writing these blogs is getting to go back through all my old pictures and videos that I never really had time to review or digest at the time, it used to be get back to the ship back up my memory card of the day to the ships computer, my own hard drive, a spare hard drive and burn the files onto blank DVD's for storage. Yes, I was a little apprehensive about losing all my footage even back then and over the years I've seen so amny former colleagues who have lost their footage/pictures from those days!

The Malacca Incident
So many things went wrong with the stop in Malacca that I'm not surprised we only tried to go there once! Firstly there had been a massive party in the crew bar the night before and everyone was still drunk or horrifically hungover. I remember trying to rouse one of the photogs who only hours before had said 'Yeah, definitely give me a call in the morning' she was still passed out and was not going to make it.

Photog's day off at James Bond Island, Thailand
My roommate Matt & his girlfriend Lena had been researching Khao Phing Kan or whta is more commonly known as James Bond Island which is a small island in the northeast of Phang Nga Bay a few hours away from where we docked in Phuket. They also wanted to visit the fishing village of Ko Panyi which was famous for the whole village being in stilts above the water.

Dealing with PAX first thing in the morning, hanging out with the cast & stories of creepy weirdos onboard!
One of the coolest aspects of being a videog was getting paid to go on the excursions that the guests would pay hundreds sometimes thousands of dollars to do the same activity. The Photo department had an understanding with the Shore Excursions department that they would provide two tickets for both the videographers as and when they were needed.
