THE 2.0 TOURIST AND THE SUPER TRAVELLER
The digital revolution and the spread of new technologies have made travel increasingly simple and accessible, making it unthinkable to separate digital from tourism. The Internet is an integral part of our lives and especially when we travel we can no longer do without looking for information on a search engine or review aggregators to compare various offers. The 21st-century traveler is always connected before, during and after the experience, which is why the challenge for the tourism sector lies in digital.

I just moved to America from Australia (during Covid)
I’ve travelled internationally before, but not like this. Since the start of the Covid experience, Australian citizens have technically not been allowed to leave the country unless they fall into a specific category like being an important government official, an athlete, a celebrity or if they can prove they’ll be out of the country for three months or more. I fell into the three month pleb category. The “exemption” process itself was pretty straightforward for me as I sent through a copy of my permanent American visa as evidence. If I wasn’t going for three months or more I doubt I would have got an exemption but it’s almost certain I would have had difficulty getting back.

Oh Shit, I'm Here - Letters From Slovakia
At the time of my writing this, I am suspended over the Atlantic Ocean in a giant metal tube with flaps on the sides of it. That’s pretty neat. Technology is pretty neat. If I was a monkey, I would be terrified. Imagine living your whole life chillaxing in the trees with your sole thought being “heehoo banana” only to be put in a giant metal tube and launched thousands of feet into the air. Should I be more terrified than I am? Anyway, by the time I have finished writing this and have this particular piece uploaded, I will be safely on the ground, because there is no internet in the heavens for poor boys like me.

Four Days in Alaska
So I had wanted to visit Alaska for a year. My daughter headed to Soldotna on the Kenai Peninsula the Summer of 2019 to do an internship with the Kenai Watershed and hadn’t been back since. Having a marvelous time, she continued on with a Fall fellowship at the Anchorage Museum shortly before we all fell prey to the Covid spell last Spring . She decided to find work and stay throughout the Summer and the following Fall.
