I could turn this place into a penthouse. For instance this room. This room could have been the kitchen. Right size, nice window, sun comes in. I'd have I'd have teal-blue, copper and parchment linoleum squares. I'd have those colours re-echoed in the walls. I'd offset the kitchen units with charcoal-grey worktops. Plenty of room for cupboards for the crockery. We'd have a small wall cupboard, a large wall cupboard, a corner wall cupboard with revolving shelves. You shouldn't be short of cupboards. You could put the dining-room across the landing, see? Yes. Venetian blinds on the window, cork floor, cork tiles. You could have an off-white pile linen rug, a table in... in afromosia teak veneer, sideboard with matte black drawers, armchairs in oatmeal tweed, a beech frame settee with a woven sea-grass seat... (sits up) it wouldn't be a flat it'd be a palace. --The Caretaker

The Moby-Dick Metaphor
Growing up, Moby-Dick has always been that “household name” in terms of classic books that any bibliophile is meant to read. True enough, some schools here and abroad require their students to read Herman Melville’s novel to give their “graded feedback” regarding the piece. In my case, though, Moby Dick was never liked by my professor, so I was never required to review or give feedback on that literary masterpiece. And to be honest, I originally only read novels that are required by my school or, currently, by my clients who wanted their works validated. I only started reading classic novels during and after college. I do read books — I swear — but I mainly cater to fantasy and comic books exclusively.

Way Down East (1920)
Way Down East is a hundred-and-three-year-old masterpiece, starring the beautiful, virginal Lillian Gish as a young girl, Anne Moore, living with an elderly mother, who sent to her rich relatives "way down east"; where, like Mabel Normand's Mickey, or Unity as portrayed by Mary Pickford in Stella Maris, she is a "fish out of water." Her lack of graces and social caste is underscored by the narrative; which, oddly was a common plot device of the time. In Mickey, it is used for comic effects. In Stella Maris and Way Down East, the point is to emphasize the tragedy of the central character's situation. It is class-conscious, yet, condescends to the lower classes, as if they were simply fairy tale princesses cleaning out the ashes of the hearth, while their ugly step-sisters while the night away dancing. Once they meet "Mr. Right," a Prince Charming hailing from the "right" sort of stock, the right kind of people, they are allowed to cast off their rags, acquire beauty and social graces, and live "happily ever after" in a bourgeois dream of Victorian romance and staid, tried-and-true, conservative American values. That is not quite Stella Maris, but it seems the summation of Way Down East.

Netflix is my boyfriend. I don't mean that in a romantic way; I just mean that Netflix has been there for me when I've needed it, and it's helped me through some hard times.
