Daily Reflections
08/30/2022 Tears for Fears Might Just Have Been Right “Everybody wants to rule the world” I remember, vaguely, when that video premiered on MTV. In the dining room at my grandparents’ house. The stale and sweet odor of a very polish dinner (from the night before) wafting past the Formica countertops and over the firm, food speckled flat carpeting. There was a point in our mass media culture when there were only a few channels, and everyone had the same sense of what was on. Parents and their children had MTV, for example, on for background noise. Like a picture filled novelty radio.

Letters to My Younger Self
No trigger warnings are required. Letter #1: April 2016 Dear Miranda, You’re only a few years away from the end of your teenage years. You are nearly 17 years old. 16 going on 17. Oh, geez, on the edge of seventeen or entering the dancing queen year? These have not always been the easiest years of your life. You’ve been bullied. You’ve had crushes. Your crushes haven’t liked you back. You thought you loved someone and you thought that person loved and then they turned out to be a jerk. You’ve tried to fit in by listening to rap and hip hop but hated that music. You tried to listen to a lot of newer music but hated that too. You’ve been stressed out. You’ve been sleep deprived. You’ve also had some great times. Through the highs and lows you’ve experienced throughout these years you’ve still survived. You never went through with your suicidal thoughts. This has been a great time of learning for you.

Coffee Thoughts - the Challenge
Self-improvement is a currently trending topic, which is good, because a lot of us are depressed as f***. One of the key aspects that seems to be associated within the self-improvement movement is rooted within challenges. We can easily compare these “challenges” to goals, however, “goals” never sounds as intimidating or exciting as a “challenge”. Imagine if you were to be invited on a quest (yes - we are all fantasy characters now, just roll with it). Would you be more apt to join someone who asked, “hey, I have a couple of goals to complete so that we can overthrow the villain, would you like to join?” Or, would you be more likely to join someone who asked, “I am on a treacherous quest, you may join me, if you can handle the challenge.”

Daily Reflections
Out of the Trying Sham and into the Fryer There are five enemies to fryer oil: Oxygen, Water, Heat, Salt and Soap. Each one can rapidly deteriorate oil quality and hence, the taste and quality of the food fried in that oil. It is an odd irony that each of these five is essential for the human body. Okay, soap is not essential, but certainly useful for maintenance. Perhaps we should avoid ingesting something that these essential things attack as a biochemical imperative.
