Japan is preparing to host an "environmentally friendly" international tournament
Japan is preparing to host the first edition of the "SpoGomi" world garbage collection championship, next November, where 20 teams will compete for the title by collecting the largest amount of garbage from the streets of Tokyo.
And the qualifying rounds began around the world, to select a national team that roams the streets of the Japanese capital in search of garbage.
According to the tournament rules, each team consists of three players and the participating teams are given one hour to collect rubbish in a designated area, but the real challenge lies in sorting it correctly into incinerable waste bags, recyclable plastic containers, tin cans and other categories.
The referees will supervise the progress of the game, as it is forbidden to run and collect garbage from private property or highways.
Upon completion, the amount of rubbish collected by each team will be weighed. The team that collected the most rubbish will win prizes and medals. In the event of a tie, additional statistics will be taken into account, based on the type of rubbish collected.
Previously, local SpoGomi events were held on beaches and riverbanks, said Takayasu Udagawa, supervisor of the competition run by the Nippon Foundation.
"We haven't made a final decision yet on where the finals will be held, but we expect it to be on the streets somewhere in the city centre," Udagawa said.
He added: "We think it is important to collect garbage in cities due to the increase in the amount of waste in the oceans around the world, so it is better that we can collect this garbage before it gets worse."
The tournament will witness the participation of a number of countries such as the United States, Canada, South Africa, Egypt, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and other countries.
It is noteworthy that the word “SpoGomi” is an abbreviation of the words “sport” meaning sport and “gomi” meaning garbage in Japanese, and it is a popular competition that took place in Japan for the first time in 2008 as a local competition to encourage people to clean up public places.
