A dream I had about drowning

I am a firm believer that dreams are messages.

I woke up from a dream this morning that had utterly shaken me to the core. I had a dream I was drowning inside a video game world. It’s hard to explain, but you know those green warp pipes Mario goes into to go into another world? I was going into one, going to another world in my dream, but it was filled with water. I kept travelling through the pipe for what felt like forever but I was unable to breathe. And then I managed to force myself awake from the dream.

It really wasn't like a scary dream or anything, it was just unlike anything I have ever experienced before. That feeling of not being able to breathe while asleep was utterly terrifying.

So me being me, I decided to do some research on the meaning of a dream where you’re drowning underwater. I'm sure the pipe warping into another world means something as well, it was just the drowning that left me feeling quite unsettled this morning.

Here’s what I found from this website:

  • Feeling overwhelmed- Dreams about drowning can signify the responsibilities you are abandoning in the waking world.
  • Rebirth- Water is a common symbol or representation of rebirth. While you were in your mother’s womb, you floated in water, waiting to be born and now water remains a significant part of your existence. We use it to cleanse, to nourish our bodies. This is a positive interpretation because it implies a transformation which is usually a step towards a greater life path in the waking world. I like this interpretation.
  • Struggles- You may struggle with your goals, financial worries, and even accepting yourself for who you are. However, if you panic and let these struggles weigh you down in real life, you will drown in these problems. The dream could represent a burden you feel from these struggles and tries to help you work through them.
  • Hopelessness- Feeling hopeless has a direct relationship with drowning because no matter how hard you struggle to avoid drowning, without any rescue coming your way, you get tired and drown because the situation is out of your control.
  • Negative Emotions- A dreamer with negative emotions is bound to have a dream as scary as drowning. The anxiety you experience during the dream and after is a scary experience. Negative emotions can feel like a burden, especially when it’s all you can think about. Experiencing things like pain, struggles, anxiety, and sadness are a lot for anyone to handle in the waking world. This is why a drowning dream serves to reflect these feelings. If you fail to handle these emotions, they will eventually find a way to your subconscious mind, meaning both your waking life and your dreams will be filled with misery you can’t control.
  • Losing Yourself- You have changed so much that who you are is only a reflection of your former self. This can happen due to changes in your life, like a new friend or a brand new work environment. These factors can influence who you are so much that you no longer can recognize who you are. Alter to the new changes on your path, and be gentle with yourself as you go along your life journey.
  • Emotional Test- This dream could be a warning to whoever is dreaming it. A drowning dream can signal the possibility of an emotional test which means you are about to face some challenges that will test who you are.

Personally? I think all of these could apply somehow to what I am going through at the moment. I had also lost a friend to a drowning incident a few years back so maybe he was trying to communicate something in my dreams too. The pure terror I felt when I realized I couldn't breathe is something I will never forget.

I love dream interpretations as my dreams are usually quite bizarre. Maybe the pipe was a portal, maybe it represented my writing as I have big plans for something in the future, or it could have just been a metaphor for my life itself. I don't really know. The article I had read before told me to mediate on the meaning so I may do that later.

Thanks for reading you guys.
