The problem with jobs for single or struggling parents.

By Summer McQuiller Published 5 years ago 3 min read

In today’s world anyone and everyone can get a job. People are no longer turned away for race, gender, or religion. Yet there are still people who need jobs, but aren’t able to get ahold of ones available to their schedule. I’m talking about moms and dads who can’t afford daycare, don’t have family to babysit their babies, and desperately need money.

You can say “File for unemployment.” or “Get a loan.”, but reality is that not many people qualify for unemployment. And without a secure source of established income you can’t get a loan.

The current divorce rate is shockingly very high, leaving many kids with one parent. Or 2 single parents that are equally struggling. Another scary realization is the number of children who grow up with only one parent because the other left before they were born. For example, a young woman who had a baby with a “one night stand” or with someone who wasn’t willing to be a parent.

These single parents are expected to care for their baby, themselves, keep a house, and a job. However, no one thinks about how that person is supposed to pay for daycare without a job. And you can’t get a job without putting ur child in some sort of daycare.

It’s not only single parents that have this issue. My husband and I have a toddler. He works a full time job and I stay at home. I’m also a full time online college student. Every with his job, plus a ton of overtime, we still can’t get bills paid. If we do then the rest of the month is super tight that there’s no room for an accidental flat tire or emergency room visit if our baby gets sick.

The issue isn’t that people in my situation or similar ones are lazy. The problem is, no matter how hard we look, there’s no job that allows you to bring your child. Also, ‘work from home’ jobs are highly scarce. When looking up jobs you can do from home, you end up on a completely different site than where you started your search. You’ve entered your email into so many sites just to get “results” and all you get in return are scams after scams.

Why, in today’s modern world, do we not have employment positions for people who can’t afford to have someone else watch their child? Not everyone can survive on one persons income and some people don’t have another person to rely for income. The only “jobs” at home parents can get their hands on are making things and selling them, which is not an easy job.

You have to get money to make the product, make enough to have options for people, and then you have to find clientele. It’s a long process that single parents and stuggling families don’t have time for. In a world that requires most single people to keep 2 jobs to survive, it’s a shame that single parents and stuggling families can’t find jobs from home easier.

Companies could be missing out on amazing employees simply because that potential employee is fighting their hardest to ensure their child’s safety while also trying to provide. I’m not saying that every single business needs to let people sit at home all day doing their work when they want.

Speaking from my point of view, being at home I can make sure my baby isn’t doing stuff she’s not supposed to, but I can still get plenty of work done. You would work on the computer or on you phone and in order to make sure your baby is doing okay all you have to do is lift your eyes from the screen for a second.

Organizations could actually save money this way. They wouldn’t have to worry about equipment to go in a building such as desks, chairs, computers, etc. They also wouldn’t have to worry about electricity, water, landlines, and other bills that come with renting/owning a building for their company. Yet businesses still don’t offer at home jobs.

If not work from home positions, then they could go the more expensive route and offer day care at the place of work. All they would have to do is deduct a reasonable amount of money from the parents paycheck to pay the daycare workers. This would be more expensive for the company, but they would get a, potentially, quality employee, the parent would get to have a job and ensure their child’s safety.

This is a simple step that so many businesses, companies, or organizations could make to better themselves and so many other lives. There are numerous amounts of people that need jobs, but can’t afford to leave their child with someone else. In today’s world, this is something that needs to be a normality.
