It took me awhile to to truly figure out how I wanted to approach writing about tarot cards. Especially in a blog like form. At first I thought we'd go through all the cards in the deck, and branch out from there. But the more I thought about it, the less it seemed magical. So why not let the deck pick for itself.
Since tarot does rely in intuition and the ability to chose the right card because you already unconsciously know where to stop in the deck. Or because your guides will influence the cards while you are shuffling. it made more sense that if I wanted to write about each card. Then it was only fair to let the deck have some say. Which leads to each post also becoming a single card reading as well. It adds layers to the blog, the practice and providing information. While also keeping things unique to my own style. Since I do believe that witchcraft is a unique practice to us all. Of course we must respect, practice with knowledge, and know the limits. There is no right or wrong way to dive into being a witch. And I know I am not one who is about to judge. But I will note a few things of personal belief, before we get going. Just so they are out of the way.
1. You do not need a fancy set up or fancy tools to do magic. You just need your own willpower and willingness to begin.
2. I believe that some practices are closed. And I do not pretend to know them. I also think if someone is invited in by the closed practice, this is allowed but you cannot ram your way into it.
3. I do believe in deities, spirits, internals and angels. They can come through in divination readings like tarot cards.
4. And finally, take what speaks to you. Trust yourself, and believe that when you have some reaction to any reading I present or card I present that it may be for you!
Now that those are out of the way! Back to the focus of the post today! Tarot cards! And as the deck would have it, we are focusing on the four of pentacles. Now if I have to be honest, Pentacles make me cringe a bit when it comes to tarot cards. Because usually when I am pulling a pentacle I am being reminded to stop flipping out about money. To keep working and the abundance will flow. Money is perhaps one of the biggest stressors I have. Mostly because I have a deep seat fear of debt, and well I graduated university... that means I have some debt. Plus if there is one 20 some year old who can tell me they have never had master card debt.... please share your secrets. Because in this day in age I feel like I have a main job, and then a thousand little side hustles. So when I see a pentacle.... I know for me at least. This is about money.
But Pentacles aren't just about money. While in some decks, they are referred to as coins. They do represent any material aspect. They also represent the element of earth. They are the suit that is ever changing, growing and requires a deep sense of grounding in oneself. They often speak to the world around us. So when we seem them pop up, the classic answer is typically job related and where we feel we are financially are.
Additionally, in numerology the number four represents hard work and stability. When you pair this with pentacles. The card begins to tell you the story without even needing to pick up the guide book. Right off the bat, we can see that this card is encouraging the hard work that has lead to this kind of stability. When we place this with the notion that the card also represents money and material possession. Then we can also suggested that when we find ourselves seeing the rewards of our hard work, we can lean into this time and trust there is a level of stability that will allow us the sense of play. Now in my deck, the goddess stands on top of a hill of red and pink flowers. She holds the coins in her hands and so no worry of losing them. Instead she is celebrating them in a sense. The reading then becomes a reminder that when you have stability and abundance, you should be celebrating it rather than hoarding it. And this message is reinforced in my guide book. My book also suggests that its a good time to explore multiple avenues of opportunity. Overall, I get a very positive vibe from this card.
Now for those of you who have doe your own tarot readings, you know that there is also the reverse to worry about. And well the reverse may often seem negative. I would suggest that it may just be reminder or a soft cation. For this card in particular the warning becomes about hoarding wealth and now allowing money to flow. Because if everything is a form of energy we have to let money flow. In has to go out in order to come back in to us. When we do not trust ourselves to let go of money, we also do not trust ourselves to see opportunity for money either. When blind ourselves to our own opportunities and potential when we cannot or will not see our own abundance and hard work. It can also be about laziness. But I don't feel that in this card on this particular day. I personally am seeing and feeling the whole vibe of opportunities and celebrating even the small wins. Because my card is decorated in reds, I also see the passion behind it as well. Which was the encouragement I needed to actually feel okay with writing about each card. But also that maybe I should be putting myself out there a bit more when it comes to Tarot Readings... Especially because I don't think a Facebook back is the best way to go about it.
Now in most traditional decks, the card meaning is reversed. Where the upright position suggests that one is hoarding their possessions. And the reverse is the positive flow of abundance and trial and error of opportunity. However you chose to read the card is up to the deck you have and how you interpret the card. While there are thousands of tarot card sites and manuals of each card. I think what we may all forget is that when we work with a card deck. We work with our own magic as well. There is a reason that when I look at my deck. It doesn't split the card in reverse or upright position in the guidebook. Because the artist of the cards found that too black and white in readings. And while I do find myself agreeing with this idea, i like to keep in mind when they are in the reverse position. Because I have the knowledge that when they are reversed they can have the opposite reading. Card position also becomes so important when you do multiple readings as well. But when it becomes about one card. There is only so many ways placement can be impactful.
And well it may seem they only have two sides. The best thing you can do for yourself is to see all sides. Find out what other readers see and research the cards. Because each will speak to you.
For me, my four of pentacles.... is a goddess full of abundance. She is confident in how she holds her coins. And she is not worried about them being snatched away. Instead she is grounded in the earth, the flowers are growing. There are multiple ways to find abundance. And I am in a good place to explore them. Even if it means I lose a few coins. Which is the scary part for me. Which means I need the reverse as well. Because if I begin to hoard my coins, I won't ever take more chances. It goes back into the layers.
Which is why I love tarot so much. Every reading I get to do is different. Even of I get similar cards in each, they play off each other, position and of course the question asked. It's a skill form I hope to keep learning about and I am excited to have a place to write about them. And I hope that people will feel comfortable sharing their own knowledge as well. Because even if it is my dream to one day sell readings. I never want to gate keep what other people know. Especially because tarot is open, and we all have unique and beautiful ways to view things.
Thank you so much for reading! I'm hoping to be consistence with the tarot postings, and hope you'll enjoy more.
