Exploring personality types as a career

How to monetize personality writing

By Alex RPublished 5 years ago 7 min read

I have always been strongly interested in personality systems, such as the MBTI and Enneagram, astrology. This is what I spent most of my time on and also usually preferred to converse about. I also find it valuable to understand more myself and others. Though I’ve always been drawing to learning about personality types, most people don’t really know much about or haven’t heard about. This means sometimes they are dismissed as being uninteresting. Yet there is potentially a lot to write about and discuss, so even though it's a more niche area there is a small but interested audience in reading about it.

Personality writing is a niche that can be fairly difficult to monetize from, though that could be said about any more obscure interest. As potential ways to monetize this interest, I have thought about making my own blog, or creating a personality test, or even publishing my own book. It would be interesting or useful to find a way to monetize the writing I do around personality even though it sometimes feels more like an area that works better as a hobby. Some people also work as consultant in personality and working with their type, though I prefer writing about it more than the idea of being a psychologist.

Member-based websites can be a good way to monetize writing based around personality because discussing personality is often suited a forum based website. It seems like personality sites discussion forums so member based websites like Patreon, Onlyfans, Memberful are suited to monetization done in that kind of way. Discussion forums seem like a good place to discuss personality, so personality monetization seems suited to a member based platform where users can discuss and comment based on topics.

While personality systems and writing about personality systems can be a difficult area to monetize, there are many areas of interesting areas that come up when exploring areas such as human personality. Human personality has always interested me even though it puts people into definite categories, and this can be either a good or bad thing.

MBTI is generally seen as the most popular or well-known personality system. For that reason it might be the most practical to monetize from. I get a lot from writing and learning about this system even though it has it has some skeptics. Something I like about MBTI was how it clearly helped me identify certain things about myself, that was less clear before learning about this. I was able to become clearer about certain aspects of myself that I knew about previously, but didn't have the words for. I learned that MBTI system also has a lot more validity than it was given credit for, which was important to learn because I think with a lot of niche areas people discount something they don't know much about even though they don't really understand it. I think if people think they can learn something that is useful or interesting about themselves, they will be drawn to learning more about personality.

Putting people into categories can sometimes be controversial, so it's also good to recognize that even while we learn from understanding our personality category, hopefully accurately, people are more than their categories too. Understanding someone's type can help with understanding how to approach that person, which is important and may be difficult without knowing as much about them. I think people like to learn about themselves so if advertise as an entertaining and insightful way to learn more about themselves, they would becoming interested in learning more about these systems.

I work with a few different systems like the MBTI, Enneagram and astrology. All of these systems can sometimes have a lot of skepticism in from people, yet they are all actually valid systems with a lot of accurate information, depending on who is using them or where the information is coming from. Particularly I think the MBTI is dismissed because of mistyping and misunderstanding, or because of being seen as superficial.

The MBTI and Enneagram, and astrology are sometimes dismissed because there is inaccurate information from some people, and it takes a long time with these systems in order to fully understand them. That is why a learning based platform which involves member involvement could be a good way of monetizing this system. The Enneagram and astrology also have a new age element which some people are drawn to, so while the MBTI is more popular these systems can attract people from a self-development crowd who use personality for personal growth as much or more than learning about personality. This is another potential area to monetize from.

Right now, I have been focusing on working with the MBTI system the best even though it is sometimes dismissed initially. I also dismissed the MBTI as invalid for a long time, and it wasn't until I learned my accurate type more accurately that I started to understand that the MBTI was actually a lot more valid than I gave it credit for. The MBTI was actually a very valid way of categorizing personality, or at least more valid than given credit for. It may be more superficial than systems like the Enneagram or astrology, yet it still had some valid insights. After so many years of working with personality, I started to start to understand MBTI, and even though MBTI was a more artificial system than the Enneagram or Astrology, it still had a lot to offer by understanding more about people's personalities, strengths and weakness.

The MBTI has quite a lot involved, though it basically consists of 16 types and four main areas introvert/extrovert, intuition/sensing ,feeling/thinking, judging/perceiving, an also the four areas or the four different functions. These address the way a person approaches tasks or perceive or functions in the world. The MBTI was constructed to be more popular, while the Enneagram and astrology were not necessarily meant to understood by a lot of people. The rather simplistic or accessible nature of the system makes it easily to understand, and therefore perhaps accessible to people or easier for drawing people in at first.

The MBTI is probably the most popular personality system also. This is because its not as esoteric and more scientifically based than the Enneagram or astrology. It seems like people sometimes got turned off by more esoteric systems while the MBTI seemed to be a more scientifically validated system or seemed more based around science. The MBTI does have a more 'scientific' background while the Enneagram and astrology are perhaps less scientifically based...

I favor the MBTI over the Enneagram also because people tend to mistype less. The MBTI feels more like a fun system people don't necessarily take it too seriously. This is also why MBTI may have more commercial appeal in general. It's also great to have fun with these systems and not take the types too seriously all the time. The MBTI also seems more popular, which perhaps makes it easy for people to understand, while the Enneagram feels more mysterious or like people don't understand it as much. Of course there's quite a bit of mistyping in both systems but it is sometimes less noticeable in the MBTI community. Some people offer the practice of typing professionally, which seems like an interesting avenue. It probably takes a lot of experience at typing to get to that professional kind of level.

Both the MBTI and astrology have a lot of interesting information when done validly and are also fun and interesting to work. While there is some controversy, and different ways of approaching, these system are very informative and have a lot to offer when approached in the right way. Enneagram often takes a more spiritual approach, and astrology takes a more predictive approach. Personally I don't use either the Enneagram or astrology for spiritually or astrology for predictive purposes, and prefer to focus on the personality aspect, but they are interesting for their more esoteric or predictive practices. I think the fun and interesting nature of MBTI and astrology can give them some commercial appeal.

MBTI is a also a particularly good system for helping to understand personal strengths or what they are good at- at least in terms of career, and why someone may be lacking in a certain area while stronger in another in area. The Enneagram and astrology don't do this as clearly as MBTI, or they more describe a person's temperament or a certain element of their personality while MBTI very clearly identifies what person is like to have a higher aptitude with which makes it useful in career tests. In regards to personality tests, which can show strengths and weaknesses, I think that people like learning about their personality strengths or career strength so this could be useful to monetize from on that level.

People sometimes see personality types as a kind of obscure or off key interest. However, personality types have a lot to offer because they help understand strengths and weakness and help understand more about ourselves and other(sometimes MBTI is particularly good with) and also help with providing insight into people in general, the way the work and why people are the way they are. This is fascinating to study and observe, and it helps to be able to understand people on this kind of level.

Personality systems are not the first area that comes to mind with monetizing easily, there are still ways to monetize with this this interest. I think a status or member based platform is suited to personality types and personality writing/discussion. There is always more content to discuss and more to learn about.
