The Barcelona chair is an extremely popular and elegant chair originally designed by Mies Van der Rhoe and Lilly Reich, for the German pavilion at the International Exhibition of 29th June, 1929, in Barcelona, Catalonia. It was used by a number of artists and writers and later by a variety of political leaders, such as the German President, 1932 election campaign of Hitler. Its success and fame led to its selection as a design for the Barcelona chair in the Futurist exhibition of the same year, which was organised by the Art and Design School in Barcelona. There are several models of this chair available from reproductions to the original Barcelona Chair.

The basic shape of the Barcelona chair has its origins in the English Ealing Club chairs which had legs made of wood, with wing backs. This became the model for the modernist Barcelona chair, which is also known as the Baroque or Pre-Raphaelite chair. The main characteristic of this chair design is its simplicity and the use of bright or silvery-grey glass and steel. The legs of this Barcelona chair are often left bolt together, but on lesser models this may be left open.

The Barcelona chair design was adopted by the Ealing Club as an expression of their nationalistic feelings against the "international Jewellery craze" of the time. This chair was also adopted by the German National Socialist Party. It was not, however, the exclusive property of one sector of the party - it was in fact used by the entire working class as an emblem of revolution and standing alone. The Barcelona chair has been reproduced many times in different variations. The most popular one is the standard version which is often a scaled down version of the original design. It can be found in various colors and finishes.

A major update of this design happened in the late nineteen seventies when the Barcelona chair saw a revival in popularity and it was then that the design found it way into the world of modern furniture. This new Barcelona chair has no leg connections and is either bolted together with screws or has a framework that holds the legs together. This new design features a simple design but has been updated again in the modern era. This chair has a smooth running track and has a very contemporary appearance to it. The legs of this chair are made from either wood or metal and in either case it can be found with either a thick or thin cushions.

In the year nineteen eighties a replica of the Barcelona chair was designed which was called the German pavilion. This chair was adopted by the Ealing club and is thought to have been designed by the German interior designer, Dietrich Reichelt. This chair is the opposite of the Barcelona chair, as it features solid legs and is bolted together with nuts and bolts. This design was made popular by the film "thalie."

The modern Barcelona chair has gone through quite a number of design changes over the years. In the nineteen eighties a mass-produced Barcelona chair was made by the United States based company called Meco. This is the chair that we know today as the Reichelt chair. This Barcelona chair has no springs and is usually mass-produced with plastic and chrome plating on all the joints. The mass-produced design was a response to the consumers desire to have a lower-priced chair which was more contemporary than the mass-produced ones.

Over the years there have been a variety of designers who have adapted the Barcelona chair to make some very interesting designs. One of these variations is the chair with almost complete individual panels where each panel is attached to the next panel in the base. This type of design is called the by-volume van der rohe chair. The design of this Barcelona chair offers many choices for an individual to choose from.

The Barcelona chair can be found nearly anywhere today as it is still very popular with people who like to collect antique chairs. There are also companies who offer reproduction Barcelona chairs for those collectors who want to reproduce the look of the early nineteen eighties exhibition. These chairs look like they should cost about four hundred dollars. If you find the right one, they can be very valuable.
