Academic Writing Changed My Life

People say your luck can run out. I think that was what happened when our family hit rock bottom.

I grew up comfortably. We didn't have too much, but our basic needs were always met along with some secondary needs. The first time I noticed something was wrong was when I was called out of class one day and told that my school fees had not been cleared, so I would not be allowed to attend any more classes. That was in 2013.

The period of struggle our family went through taught me a lot. So after high school, I began looking for ways to make money online. With my introverted nature, I knew I could not handle jobs that required me to get out and socialize with people one-on-one.

I've tried quite a few things ranging from affiliate marketing to dropshipping, but they were not quite ideal for me. After I started university, my need to have income increased since I didn't want to burden my parents with unnecessary expenses. After Covid 19 struck, I was stuck at home with nothing to do, and I got tired of it pretty fast.

Luckily, a friend of mine connected with a company that would train people in academic writing, and the price was fairer than most trainers I had seen online.

So I took a leap and borrowed Ksh 4,000 to attend the month-long training. I even had to live with my cousin since it was closer to the office location instead of commuting daily and using Ksh 350 daily for transport. Luckily, I was hired by the same company after my training.

I felt like I had hit the jackpot.

I was devoted to the job. After all, I had nothing else to do. I remember my first payment. It wasn't much, but I had recovered the Ksh 4,000 I had invested into training. Within two months, I increased my work output and was able to start earning Ksh 30,000 per month.

From making nothing to being able to handle my own needs.

In about six months, I was able to move out of my parent's house and cater to all my expenses on my own. I also pay my school fees now.

30k may seem like very little to most, but I have very few needs. I have worked out a budget system that is suitable for me.

My earnings are relative since it depends on how much work I complete. Anyone can earn above 50k with this job. I have friends making that much, and I know it is possible. You can accomplish the same and more if you see other people doing it.

There are many people today looking for another source of income. The state of the economy is pushing many to increase their income, but it is difficult for most people to find well-paying jobs at this time.

Academic writing can be helpful if you are a 9 to 5 employee looking for supplementary income, a stay-at-home mum, or a campus student looking to finance your escapades. All you need to do is learn the necessary skills and find clients.

You might say I was lucky to have been connected to a good trainer. Indeed I was fortunate in that sense. However, my ability to get the job depended on my willingness to learn and put in the work. I also acknowledge that not many people are fortunate enough to have the time and resources necessary to start this type of work. I understand this. However, we have the internet, where information is abundant. If something is important enough, you will create time for it.
