For all key workers during the effects of Covid-19

By Rayann BradshawPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

Dear Key Workers,

You probably don't hear something like this everyday, as a pandemic rushes throughout the world, spreading like wildfire their are many people out there fighting to get through the daily grind, from people having to stay locked in their houses receiving a basic furlough payment, or those on zero hour contracts who've lost the many hours they should be entitled to no matter what the circumstance. It's a battle, but a slow war the country is winning despite many restrictions, with a lack of funding nurses and doctors are helping to research the cure, keeping people medicated for whatever they're troubles may be, working long over stretched hours on minimum pay (which is something I have viewed negatively for many years, the pay is atrocious for the danger you put yourselves in every day with the bravest of faces, nothing can tear you down.) I have seen many struggles during my life, but nothing compared to my wonderful stepmother who visits the elderly at home, people who need help but either don't have family there to support them, or a family that is doing their absolute best to provide the most suitable care.

Working long hours without so much as a grateful smile, I can see the pain behind her eyes watching as people she's assisted gradually fade into nothing forgetting who they are, forgetting the world and soon being forgotten themselves in search for a relatively perfect afterlife, I am lucky in that sense never having watched pain or suffering first hand, instead my job is easy compared to any daily task undertaken by my stepmother and her wonderful colleagues. Without your help many of us would fall, and never get back up again, but here we are in the year of life changed situations, gaining more appreciation for the hard work you manage day in, day out. You should be recognised for your patience, tenacity and much more every single day, you should be rewarded fairly, especially in regard to getting treat with the utmost respect every citizen can show without much effort whatsoever.

Please, don't get down on yourselves, you are keeping the world afloat right now, and everybody needs to witness that, be thankful for that and remember that everyone has a right to be who they are, thank you for being the helpful caring adults you've become, thank you to teachers who are still educating the next generation - but most importantly thank you to everyone abiding by the lock-down restrictions here in the UK, if we come together, this is something we can overcome.

But, let's never forget the people working in key roles, helping us stay nourished, helping us stay in contact with friends and family no matter where they are, and thank you to everyone who's working the front line seeing the pain but yet still pushing forward and conquering your own fears, to keep ours at bay, it's a pleasure to know so many people out there fighting against Covid-19, I hope you see the appreciation on every person's face that has overcome this disease, that has managed despite all odds to recover and be healthier than ever before.

However, beforehand my experience with medical experts has been varied, from depression to an unfortunate circumstance, I have relied upon the help other's give, I have thanked many of you for the work you've done from telling me everything will be alright, from cleaning up the mess I have made on countless occasions, but also the mess other's will make no matter their situation. Injustice is something we witness every single day, but the injustice suffered from these key workers is seemingly never-ending, underappreciated, underpaid and often looked over my the government and society in general. Nobody deserves a better shot at creating their future than people studying medicine, or those studying mental health because you are the saviours, the very bones our country stands upon, without you it would all come tumbling down.

You deserve recognition, and you deserve every letter written thanking you for the work and effort you're putting in every single day - but this is where I leave my story knowing that after this whole event the world will see each and every one of you in a different life, the work you do is utterly valuable - no price can be put on the achievements you master, or the people you have helped while putting your own life on hold.
