When you are applying for a job, the most important first step is your resume – you need to make sure that you have a resume that talks volumes about you, without making you sound pompous or arrogant. Most people are of the opinion that a resume is only details about you – your academic qualifications and your work experience; but the fact is that the resume is a lot more powerful – you can convey a lot of important things about yourself through the words you choose and the manner in which you structure it.

Here are the 5 most important things your resume can say about you:

1. Something as simple as grammatical errors or a lack of proof reading could lead your prospective employer to have a negative judgement about you. It will be easy enough for them to think that you can’t even be bothered to check for such simple errors. So, before you submit your resume anywhere, you need to make sure that you read and read the entire text, ensuring that there are absolutely no errors. A word perfect resume will give the impression of your being cautious and thorough with your work.

2. A lot of people tend to list out their duties in their resume – they will give minute details related to the work they did in their previous organisation. While there is nothing wrong in mentioning your key responsibility areas, your resume should speak more about your accomplishments. Pay emphasis on what all you were able achieve personally and for the organisation you worked for and the benefits, success or accolades it brought with it. Your achievements will allow your prospective employer to gauge whether you will be a good fit for their company or not.

3. Unless you are a rank fresher, the one section of your resume that needs to be written with a lot of care is the one that talks about your experience. By showcasing your experience, you will be able to give your interview team a look into what you would be bringing to the table. Your experience will talk about what all you were able to achieve in your previous roles and how you could use that knowledge and experience in your future roles. It would be best that you read up about the company you are applying to and tweak your experience in accordance.

4. The world that we are living in is changing drastically, and a lot of people are now looking to hire people who have made a mark in walks of life, other than just the professional one. So, if you have done any volunteer work or are associated with any foundations or trusts, you should make a mention of those. Most companies now have a CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility platform, wherein they associate themselves with non-governmental or charitable organisations or any programs that aim at making a difference in the world. If you have ever been associated with any such programs, then you should definitely make a mention of the same in your resume.

5. Finally, don’t think one resume will fit all – every time you send out your resume, you need to make sure that you tailor it to the specifics of the company you are applying to. Read up on the company profile, and tweak your resume in accordance; because when you do this, the interview panel will feel that your resume and you are suited for the job at hand, giving you a better chance at landing the job.
