The Dentist Trip of Madness
Absurdist Awakening
"I'M GOING TO DIE!!!"
"Lizzy, calm down!" Cara shouted, trying to pull me in. My fingers clutched the door frame like it was the only thing I had left to remember my great-great grandmother by.
"No, no, NO! I won't go in! You can't make me!" I shrieked, although my hold was beginning to slip. Cara noticed and pulled harder.
"You're 22 years old! Stop acting like a child!" Cara yelled back. I let out a frustrated scream into my shoulder. "Look, it's just a cleaning, okay? You'll be fine!"
"NO!!!"
Someone cleared their throat behind us.
We both whipped our heads around.
Everyone in the waiting room was staring at us like we were insane.
"Lizzy Thatcher...?" Called the nurse uncertainly.
Panic swelled in my heart.
Cara gave me one hard pull while I was distracted, and my fingers slipped off the door frame. I let out a sound almost like a whimper as she wrenched me around to stand in front of her, saying, "Yes, that's us!"
The nurse stepped back to let us walk through the door, Cara pushing me forward the whole time. I wished my feet could sink into the ground and root me into the floor, so I couldn't be moved. I could stay here forever, never needing to go into that dreaded place.
"Follow me just this way." She said, gesturing us forward. I felt my palms growing slick as I spotted the doctor's room up ahead, my heart hammering against my rib cage so hard, I feared it would break through my chest.
"Sorry about that," Cara said apologetically to the nurse as we walked forward. My panic only grew as we got closer, but Cara's grip on my arms was too strong for me to dart away again, and she was pushing me forward too hard for me to be able to stop, no matter how firmly I pressed my heels into the ground. "She has Odontophobia, she's really scared of dentists."
"Oh, I see." Said the nurse with a small laugh.
A laugh?
Was this amusing to her?
"Don't worry, we'll give her some Nitrous Oxide." The nurse assured them, "That will calm her down."
Nitrous Oxide?
Was that a poison gas??
Were they trying to poison me?!
"NO!" I screamed as we reached the door. Cara tried to push me inside, but I jammed my heels into the ground and refused to go any further. If I did, my heart would probably fly out of my chest and slam into a wall. It was beating too fast to possibly be safe.
"Lizzy, you'll be fine!" Cara groaned, shoving me harder. "It's just a cleaning, and your doctor is very professional!"
The nurse went around me and pulled my arms, so the two of them dragged me all the way to the chair, where they laid me down on it. Cara stood beside me with a hand on my arm in an iron grip, to keep me from darting away.
I looked over to the tools beside my chair. The toothbrush looked like a knife, the water sprayer was a saw, and the metal pick--
Oh my God.
The pick was a monster, hissing at me and baring sharp teeth.
I let out a scream as the monster roared, except it wasn't a roar, it was just the door banging open. And when I blinked again, it had turned back into a harmless little metal pick again.
The doctor walked in, and my heart threatened to break my rib cage. I felt lightheaded as she stepped closer, and I gripped the sides of the chair so hard, my knuckles turned white. My hands shook.
"Hello, dear, I'm Alyssa." The doctor introduced herself. She was wearing a mask, but it only made her look like a monster to me. Like a murder. Like something dangerous. "I'm going to be doing your cleaning today, there's no need to worry."
Behind her, two nurses, a man and the woman who had been there before, grabbed a clear plastic mask and slipped it onto my nose. Then a loud sound filled the air, like a thousand angry spirits shrieking at me at once.
I screamed.
"Wow, dear, it's okay!" Alyssa said, pinning me down with Cara as I thrashed, trying to throw the mask off. "It's just some Nitrous Oxide! It will calm you down!"
No, it wasn't calming me down.
It was only making me dizzy, which heightened my panic.
My vision flicked to black for a second, and suddenly all the people around me were demons, trying to keep me pinned to the chair to kill me.
I screamed louder and tried to shove them all off, but they wouldn't budge.
The Alyssa-demon picked up the toothbrush, except it wasn't a toothbrush, it was a knife.
I thrashed as hard as I could as she brought the knife down close to my face, screaming until my throat was raw.
"The Nitrous Oxide doesn't seem to be working!" The Cara-demon yelled, but it was a monstrous hiss.
The Alyssa-demon continued to bring the knife down to my face. She flicked something on, and all of a sudden it was a drill, coming down to dig a hole in my mouth.
I could take it no more.
I flung their hands off, grabbing the drill and throwing it at the Alyssa-demon.
Albeit groggily, I leapt out of the chair, darting out of the room. Despite the screams of the demons behind me, I kept running.
My brain felt like it was swimming in fog, but my panic pushed my forward. I ran through the halls, out the door. I darted through the waiting room, ignoring the startled faces around me. I ran through the parking lot, leaving Cara behind. My heart was hammering my chest.
I got in my car, pressed the gas pedal, and drove away without a backward glance.

"Excellent work!"
This story really captures the fear of going to the dentist. I've been there myself, dreading that chair. It's crazy how a phobia can take over like that. I wonder if the nitrous oxide actually helped. Did it calm her down or was there more to the story?
I loved the way you portrayed anxiety and panic in this story. Congrats on Top Story!! (sorry, I'm a bit late..)
I can't tell how much this resonates with me. I have a huge phobia of dentists due to my childhood experiences. There was a practice of drilling children's teeth unnecessarily in Ireland as the dentist would get paid for each filling they put in. I have about 30 and my dental health was irreparably ruined. Now that most of those demon dentists have gone it has become common knowledge. My current dentist even told me about it and there are loads of articles online too. Congratulations on Top Story. It was chilling!
The way you describe Lizzy’s panic is incredibly intense, making me feel like I’m right there with her.

Well done, an actual humorous horror story of sorts. But should you be driving high on the gas 😂 The drive home would be another story
This was a blast! I'm Bill. I have subscribed to you. ⚡⚡
Hahahahahaha Cara demon and Alyssa demon! That was hilarious! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Loved your story! There's a small typo in this sentence. I think you meant "two of them* dragged": "so the two of the dragged me all the way to the chair"
