Meet My Family: A Walking, Talking Comedy Show

Proof that laughter is genetic, and maybe a little contagious

By Leesh lalaPublished 8 months ago 3 min read

Families come in all shapes, sizes, and levels of loudness—but mine? We’re like a sitcom that never got canceled. I don’t know whether we should be on TV or under observation, but one thing’s for sure: we’ve turned everyday life into a full-blown comedy routine.

Let me introduce the cast of characters:

The Dad – The King of “Dad Jokes”

My dad thinks he’s hilarious—and unfortunately, so does he. This is the man who will point at a broken chair and say, “Looks like it couldn’t stand the pressure.” Every sneeze is followed by “Bless ME!” and a dramatic pause like he just delivered a punchline on stage.

Last week, he tried to use voice commands on the TV remote that doesn’t even have a microphone. He yelled “Turn on Netflix!” for 30 seconds before realizing he was talking to the toaster.

The Mom – The Drama Queen of Snacks

My mom is a loving, caring woman. But threaten her snack drawer and you’ll see a side of her you never knew existed. This woman has hidden chocolate bars in places not even thieves could find. One time, my little brother found a Kit Kat inside a box labeled “Emergency Sewing Supplies.”

She’s also the queen of exaggeration. If someone sneezes, she’s Googling symptoms and planning a family quarantine. “Your throat tickled? It could be ZEBRA FLU. I read about it on Facebook!”

The Sibling – The Prankster Without a Pause Button

My younger sibling lives to create chaos. Once, they replaced the toothpaste with mayonnaise. Another time, they filled my shampoo bottle with glitter glue. I looked like a disco ball for two days.

They’ve got a YouTube playlist of “Pranks Gone Too Far,” and they treat it like homework. The other day, I found googly eyes stuck on everything in the fridge. Even the butter looked surprised.

Grandma – The Sweet Assassin

My grandma seems sweet. She smiles, she bakes cookies, and she always gives you money wrapped in twenty layers of tissue paper like it’s some kind of family treasure map. But don’t be fooled. She knows everything happening in the house before it happens.

Also, she’s brutally honest. She once told my cousin, “That haircut makes you look like a confused pineapple.” And you know what? She was right.

The Family Pet – The Silent Observer of Our Madness

Even our dog looks permanently confused. He watches us with wide eyes, like he’s thinking, “I did not sign up for this reality show.” He’s been accidentally locked in the pantry, dressed like a pirate, and force-fed broccoli by Grandma, who thinks “he needs fiber.”

Our Family Meals = Stand-Up Comedy Meets Wrestling

Dinner at our house is a full-contact sport. The moment food hits the table, it’s survival of the funniest. Someone’s trying to tell a joke, someone’s recording it for TikTok, and someone else is arguing over who stole the last nugget like it’s a crime scene.

We once had a food fight over “mystery casserole.” Nobody knew what it was, and frankly, nobody survived it emotionally.

Why I Wouldn’t Trade This Circus for Anything

Yes, we’re loud. Yes, we’re weird. And yes, someone is always hiding in the laundry basket waiting to scare you. But this family? It’s home. And the best part of being part of a walking, talking comedy show is that there’s never a boring moment.

We laugh at ourselves, we prank each other daily, and sometimes, we laugh so hard we forget why we were even arguing in the first place. And in a world that can be way too serious, having a family that turns every day into a comedy special is the best blessing of all.
