Live

Creeping along the dreary street. Among the parked cars and trashed area. Twilight strikes and then; glistening fractures upon the floor. Shrieking and crackling beneath her “J’s.” The after silence brings nothing but a gentle breeze...”are you, ok?” I whisper. She nods yes. We survey the area. Looking back, her eyes show me fear, clasping my hand. To move forward I put the reassurance in mine.

Twilight. The 24/7 diner upon the hill outside of town outlooking the beach. The place where I grew up. The place now vacant for us. The ocean breeze brings her scent towards me grasping my attention. A scent of sweet creamy strawberries and a salty after taste on your tongue as if you’d licked the ocean. “She’s so pretty,” I thought to myself as her soft smile melts into memories like s’mores. “Be it the first time meeting face to face?” Question myself oddly as I continued. “Cool, cheffed us up some breakfast, she looking fine like a glass of wine. Did...did I really just say that? Anyways, the back of the diner is perfect! And it’s viewing the ocean too? Am I the man or naw?!” I’ll just let the curtains close on that monologue.

She sat across from me as dawn’s light kisses her skin and the embers in her eyes light up; amber. Suddenly. Boom! Boom! Boom! Throwing my body over to hers; blanketing tightly. She sobs and it became no more as I floated in and out consciousness. Things began to crumble as the flickering lights distorted her sobbing face as she sat above me. “At least she’s ok,” thinking to myself as I tried to smile for her as she did for me earlier.

Back; waking up to see her laying next to me. Pain; reaching over to touch her pretty face. Her expression made me feel like shedding... tears wouldn’t stop falling from her face. “I...I...thought I was going to loose you,” she whispered. “Never that,” I smirked trying to sit upright. “You ok? What happened?” I asked as I tried to wipe some tears from falling. “Well...before loosing all signal two days ago...” I began to loose consciousness...”the military decided to level the island to contain...” she paused. “Are...you, ok?” She, looking concerned for me. “Yeah,” I responded sighing. “So, what’s the plan babe?” I exclaimed with a bit of excitement in my voice. She blushes. “Well, first I’ll need to dress your wound again...” I passed out.

Woke up to see her beautiful face again trying to wake me. But, it wasn’t her who had woke me. The scent of death tickled my nose as she looked over at me in tears. I couldn’t believed she did this...suddenly I saw her face from once last I woke and then...”the zombies are wondering more we have to get off the island,” she exclaimed.

Fire axes in hand and drawn ready to go, we headed out the diner. Clock strikes midnight then passes to 3:00 a.m as the diner becomes distant in memory. She and I, hand in hand reaching another hill 4:40 am. Held her close and kissed her forehead and lips. Whispers of “ I love you” were shared and we continued to move forth.

Passing through town. The silence then became eerie while we made ourselves ghost to “them.” Passing; the hymns of the dead who’s wretched stench polluted the ocean’s breeze. “As long as she’s ok,” was the affirmation along the valley of death and repeated in my head.

We continued forward. This area seems different somehow. Maybe...”baby am I loosing...” she continued...”your mind?...No.” What presented itself before us was a distorted view into what looked like a city. It began to engulf our entire being. Welcomed by people we’ve apparently know? “Where did these memories come from?” Looking over to see her having the same thoughts. Smiling and crying we thought it’d be over. Suddenly, her face became distorted as mine to hers. “I’ll find you!” We shouted as we drifted apart. Then there was nothingness...I couldn’t remember the thought. But, I know she’s here somewhere the thought.

Face covered like that one year 2020 we forgot how we got here. But,...we are here. Why? Pondering the question how deep it flows inside! Missing the touch! The time we said goodbye! Why?!

“Calm down, why you be so mad? I talk the slang from the BX. “Yuuurr!!” and “Yo, what’s good bro.” New York be a part of me! Just because I speak a certain type way! Don’t make me a “banger,” thief or whatever else you may want to believe. Don’t look at these kids as if the owe you something. Treat them with respect! To make them motivate and strive for something! Actions will speak louder than words. A better future is what they really deserve.” I wake up.

I must’ve been asleep; waking up to Biggie like “it was all dream.” She’s still out there...my one...my queen. She may not be though as I may not be for her. Loving each other will forever and always linger throughout space and time. So, I know when I think of her, she thinks of me. Separate but still one flame. Sitting in the back of the 24/7 diner as we watch the twilight bring dawns rising star. Although I can’t see your face beyond these smoke and mirrors; and like that day...I will find you.
