Haven't we always heard about self-love, being your own boss, your own motivator & your own teacher?

Yet we always fall into the trap of seeking public validation. Well, there's no one to be blamed here, that's how we as humans function.

We want people to approve of us, to validate us & give us a sense of belonging. I don't say there's anything wrong with it, having your own social circle is very important. However, when the public validation thing becomes a problem is when it gets into your head. One rude comment & you spoil your entire day self-doubting. And if this happens more than often, take it as a sign of you being surrounded by toxic people.

Now, what is toxic? Who exactly is toxic? How do you even identify a toxic person?

Anyone who puts you down is toxic. Anyone who doesn't support you is toxic. The friend who always makes fun of you is toxic. The partner who doesn't treat you well is toxic.

Anyone who makes you unhappy is toxic. Believe me, you don't want these people in your life. Give no one the right to enter your personal space & leave you unhappy.

More importantly, don't depend upon anyone to make you happy. Be responsible for your own happiness.

Here are 4 ways to help you move away from toxic relationships & be responsible for your own happiness:

1. Move on, like literally

Letting go of anything or any person is always hard. But sometimes that is the only way forward. Think about it, do you really require such negativity in your life? No, right?

You will find the ones who match your vibe. Maybe not letting go is what's stopping you from finding those positives.

No easy way of saying this, but you need to eliminate them from your life. They don't even deserve a place in your recycle bin.

2) Surround yourself with only positives

Ever walked into a room full of vibrant, cheerful & positive people? Don't you instantly feel good about yourself?

Now imagine yourself in a room with people who are condescending, unhappy & negative. Doesn't feel so good, right?

For the longest time, I have struggled to identify these negative elements. Until the positives came in. It's funny how everything changes when you are around positive & uplifting people. Cutting off those negatives becomes easy, goals become achievable, life becomes easier.

Now not everyone is able to have this positivity shell around them. However, this is now a possibility, thanks to the internet. Find creators that inspire you, consume content that resonates with you. Consume their media and make them the 'friends in your head.' It's definitely worth the time ;)

3) The importance of “Me” time

Remember, nothing can ever be your ‘whole’ life, everything is just a part of your life; your job, your relationships, everything. Find time for each of these parts & for yourself. Allow yourself to soak things in, let your mind wander, don’t be so hard on yourself.

4) Keep yourself engaged with things that make you happy

I understand all of us are fighting our own battles with anxiety, negativity, disappointments, and whatnot!

One thing that might keep you sane even in the worst times is distractions, now don’t get me wrong, distraction is not synonymous to avoidance.

Unlike avoidance, getting stuff out of your head is a great way to move forward, even if it’s temporary. Whatever you do, try and completely absorb yourself in the particular activity to distract your mind. Shifting your focus elsewhere limits the power of those negative thoughts.

Ask yourself, what helps to quieten your mind? Reading? Music? Talking to your loved ones? Identify what makes you happy and do more of it ;)

Remember you're awesome in your own lil' way, don't let anyone make you feel otherwise. Be your own sunshine my friend.
