Why I’m Very Self-Conscious About My Accent – Osas Ighodaro

Nollywood actress Osas Ighodaro is speaking about her experience moving back from America to begin living and pursuing a career in Nigeria, and opening up about the differences she saw in the way that she perceived Nigeria before coming, and how she saw it after. She also opened up about her accent and explained why she's very self-concious about it even till now. Here's what Osas Ighodaro had to say.

Speaking about the idea she had of Nigeria before she moved back, and how it changed when she came down here to start working, Osas Ighodaro said:

OSAS IGHODARO: Before I came, I loved the idea of working on 'the motherland'. I am Nigerian but I had that African-American idea of 'I'm going back to AFRICA!' like Coming 2 America. That was my mindset. I didn't know much about Nigeria except whenever I go to Nigeria, it would be to grand mummy's house and that was all I experienced until I was offered this six month contract to come back on work on this show called Tinsel. I came back and I was like wait, what? I was in shock. I could not believe it. It was Lagos, but I didn't know that kind of place existed because all the propaganda that is pushed out is of lions and bears and struggle and flies. So when I went and I would see affluent Nigerians doing it, and not giving a shit about what the outside world thinks, and living life and enjoying. Living better! For those who are doing well, they are doing really well!

Then, speaking about her accent which is still more American than Nigerian, and explaining why she is very self conscious about it, Osas said:

OSAS IGHODARO: I don't have a Nigerian accent, it's been interjected. Sometimes it comes out. I am very in my head when it comes to accents. Very. When I try and do my Nigerian accent, before I even moved to Nigeria, I thought my Nigerian accent was very okay. But until I moved back, and they were like "don't do that." I'm telling you! So I get very self conscious when it comes to my accent. They will tell you to your face.
