We often hear the phrase, “I am lucky to have them,” and while it may sound cliché, I truly believe that these words hold immense power when I say them. But let me tell you my story, so you’ll understand why I consider myself so lucky to have my parents and my aunt by my side.

Growing Up in Rural India: The Struggles of Education and Societal Norms

I come from a small village in rural India. It’s a place where time seems to move slower, and while the world around us advances, many aspects of life here remain a few decades behind, especially when it comes to education and healthcare. When you walk into my village, you immediately feel the limitations: minimal educational opportunities, early marriages, and rigid societal norms. These are not just challenges for a select few; these are the barriers almost everyone here faces, especially the girls.

It’s even visible within my own extended family. Education has never been a priority for most, and traditions often hold people back from aiming for anything beyond what’s expected of them.

But for me? My story took a different turn.

My Parents: Fighting Against All Odds

In the face of societal norms, financial struggles, and the constant judgment of eagle-eyed relatives, my parents did something remarkable — they fought for us. They made sure that, despite everything, my sisters and I received a good education.

It wasn’t easy. While most families in the village followed the traditional path — farming or driving — my parents had a vision for something bigger. They believed that education was our ticket to a brighter future, and they made countless sacrifices to ensure we got that chance.

My Aunt: The Unsung Hero of My Education Journey

While my parents laid the foundation, I cannot talk about my educational journey without mentioning the person who made it all possible — my aunt. She is the single person responsible for ensuring that I received a good education, and for that, I am forever indebted to her.

In every sense of the word, she has been like a second mother to me, stepping up and going above and beyond to support my education. Her sacrifices, her dedication, and her unwavering belief in me have been the driving force behind my journey. I owe everything to her, and I make sure to do my part in being there for her, just as she has always been for me.

Creating Ripples of Change: The Impact on My Village

In our village, education has never been a priority. As I mentioned earlier, most families are involved in farming or driving, and very few have dared to dream beyond that. But things are slowly changing.

Now, after seeing my family’s journey and the opportunities we’ve had, people are starting to take that extra step. The courage to pursue higher education is spreading, and parents are realizing the value of investing in their children’s futures. Schools are being set up, and while there’s still a long way to go, I’m hopeful.

That being said, I don’t want to wait for another 2–3 decades for things to reach a decent level in my village. I want to contribute to that change now.

A Heartfelt Thank You to My Family

This blog is my humble way of thanking the people who have shaped my life — my parents and my aunt. In spite of all odds, they took care of me and my sisters, providing us with the opportunities they themselves may have never had.

As I move forward in my professional journey, I find myself looking back and connecting the dots, realizing that none of this would have been possible without their support. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

Moving Forward: Making the Best Use of Every Opportunity

As I step into new chapters of my life, I carry with me the values and lessons my family has instilled in me. My journey ahead is about making the best use of every opportunity I’ve been given and paying forward the sacrifices that were made for me.

Education has the power to transform lives — I’ve seen it firsthand. And now, it’s my responsibility to ensure that the ripple of change my family started continues to spread, not just for myself but for the many others in my village and beyond.

In conclusion, while many might say they are “lucky to have them,” for me, it’s not just a phrase; it’s a testament to the extraordinary efforts of my family. And as I reflect on my past and look toward the future, I know one thing for sure — I’ll always be lucky to have had them fighting by my side.

Thank you, Mumma. Thank you, Papa. And thank you, my dear Masi (Aunt). This journey is for you, and the journey ahead will always honor your sacrifices.
