Finlay and Ross's discoveries were confirmed in 1900 by a medical board headed by Walter Reid.
Its advice was followed by William C. Gorges during the construction of the Panama Canal, which saved the lives of thousands of laborers. These measures were used against this disease in the future.
The first effective treatment against malaria was made from the bark of the cinchona tree, which contains quinine.
This tree grows on the slopes of the Andes mountains in Peru. This bark was used by the local people against malaria for a long time. Jesuit clergy brought the treatment to Europe in about 1640, where it became very popular.
But quinine from the bark could not be separated until 1820. This work was eventually done by the French chemists Pierre Joseph Pelletier and Joseph Bienme Caventuelle, who gave this name to quinine.
In the early twentieth century, in the absence of antibiotics, patients with syphilis were deliberately infected with malaria. After this, both malaria and syphilis were controlled by giving quinine.
Although some patients died of malaria, it was considered far better than the sure death from syphilis.
