What I Say to People Comparing My Music to Osoufia - Nasboi

Nasboi talks being comedian turned musician

By Jide OkonjoPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Nigerian comedian, skit maker, actor, and now singer Nasboi is doing heavy promotion of his song called "Lover Boy" of which the music video dropped just about two weeks ago. Nasboi caught up with the people over at TVC's eSplash and during the interview, Nasboi opened up about the fear of people writing off his music as another comedian wanting to sing, and comparing his music to those of Osoufia or Mama G. Here is what Nasboi had to say on the issue.

Nasboi during interview

During the interview, Nasboi was asked "We have seen comedians and actors who did music that we just found to be like comedy. Like Osoufia or Mama G, we didn't take them seriously. So are you afraid that your fans might just think the same thing?" He responded:

NASBOI: So I have answer to this because I'm well prepared. So first off, I'm making sure that the music doesn't sound like a joke. That's my step number one. Because if it sounds like a joke, of course people will take it for a joke. I remember the Osoufia time, it still had comic feel in it you understand. So everything felt like comedy. So I am doing everything possible so I don't look like a comedian while singing. So that's the plan. And I'm operating as a musician to the part. That's exactly why I am here doing an interview for music. That's exactly why my video is out there playing on musical stations. So I'm actually doing like proper musical promotion. So let's do it this way: if my music is sweet, do you want to close your ears? So I'm just going to promote my music. If it is sweet, good for me. If it works, it works. So if you're going to close your ear and say "ah the guy na comedian, I no go listen", okay. It is only in this part of the world - I've not been to a lot of countries, but I know that in this part of the world, they don't like you doing too many things. They want to box you and guess what? I'm not ready to be in their box.
