What Does It Mean to Communicate With a Newborn?
The Importance of Communicating With the Newborn
From the moment they are born, the little ones communicate. You may be wondering how, but when the little ones start crying after being taken out of their mother's womb, they communicate. How many moms haven't you heard of talking to their babies in the womb? Well, this is a very healthy phenomenon, and during this article, you will learn how to communicate with a newborn.
The nine months of pregnancy passed as they passed, and the long-awaited moment did not take long to appear. The birth of a child represents a new beginning, both for the parents and for the child who, in the first months of life, tries his best to adapt to the new environment.
What does it mean to communicate with a newborn?
Communication is knowledge and interaction, but when they are very young, children cannot use language to communicate. In this way, they express themselves differently, but at the same time, they try to communicate with the people around them. Even if the language of the parents is different from that of their child, this does not mean that there can be no communication.
Communication is not just about words. Before hearing the first words articulated by the little one, the parents will have to teach him the "language". By communicating with the little one and teaching him the language, the parents will be able to better understand his needs, emotional states, and the child will be helped to develop harmoniously.
Returning to the previous situation, when mothers "talk" to the baby since he is in the womb, this habit is very healthy. Not necessarily for the child, but for the mother, because it will be much easier for her to interact with the little one when she is born, managing to establish a close relationship from the beginning.
How do babies communicate?
In the first months of life, even if the little ones don't know their parents' language at all, that doesn't mean they can't communicate. On the contrary, from the first moments of life they begin to communicate through crying and even smiles, and this type of communication will persist for a while.
Most of the time, parents panic when they hear their little ones crying and they don't know how to react. But very few people know that crying is not always a cause for concern.
It can signal that the little one is hungry, or that his diaper is wet, his legs are cold, he is too tired or he simply feels the need for affection, by crying he manages to attract the attention of those around him. It is true that in some cases children cry because of health problems, colic being the most common condition until the age of 3 years. Also, when they have a cold, they tend to cry a lot.
Do not think that if the little one is cuddled and cared for too much, there will be no possibility for him to cry. On the contrary, in some situations, the little ones may feel overwhelmed by the attitude of those around them.
In addition to crying, children make different sounds that parents should begin to know or rather "decode" over time. And looking at the little ones is a concrete way for them to communicate. Eye contact is very important because children are generally attracted to everything that moves, but also to auditory impulses.
When the parents are attentive and try to decode the non-verbal "message" that the child expresses, in turn, the child will notice that someone is interested in him and will continue to express himself using his methods.
As soon as the parents hold their baby, the communication will start with touches, smiles, and sounds. The little ones will be very attentive to the people around them in the first months of life, trying to understand their behavior. Even if this is not visible at first, the little ones assimilate a lot of information during this period.
How can parents communicate with their little ones?
In communication with a newborn, parents have to follow certain rules. First of all, they must pay attention to all the gestures of the little one and try to "answer" him. When talking to the little one, the tone should be very calm and soothing.
It seems strange, however, that parents should pronounce all the words correctly and, even if the little ones do not understand them from now on, they assimilate them in the form in which they hear them. When talking to the little ones, the parents should look into the little one's eyes to analyze his reactions and see if he is paying attention.
Children will soon begin to recognize the voice of loved ones, especially the mother's voice, so this has a decisive impact on the little one.
An interesting way to communicate different things to the little one is reading. Young children are very attentive when someone reads a story to them in a calm tone. Try to listen carefully to the child's first attempts to articulate the first words and encourage him.
To communicate in a way that is as correct as possible with a newborn, in no way is it recommended to use a high tone, screams, or imitations of the "language" of the little one. Also, it is not recommended that when you communicate with the little one, let the TV or any other source of this kind that can upset the child work.
