It's beautiful- isn't it?

Such a thing- so, so touching

Beyond what is merely physical

That is- when it's mutual

Or to some, maybe questionable?

Because feelings- such things are conditional

Feelings- good and bad

Feelings- Are they still present after the sun goes down?

And when life's rain brings storms?

Fickle, inconsistent and changeable, but they're-

Mutual

Mutual- butterflies, time flies for the both of them

No gray or white lies, only the truth between the two of them

Communication is key for the both of them

Mutual- feelings and fear of feelings only being temporary

Mutual- fears from what lies in the past

"I hope this lasts..."

"I hope she's not like the last..."

"I hope he's healed from his past..."

Mutual- hope that is isn't conditional

Mutual- hope that this attraction is more than what's merely physical

"Her favorite color is green, but I hope she can see past my red flags"

"His gifts are expensive, does he even look at the tags?"

"I hope she's honest..."

"I hope he's modest..."

Two hearts, both broken and put back together rearranged

Puzzle pieces are all the same but now- their placements changed

Pain can really change a person and now- two puzzles come together to paint one picture

One thousand words between the two of them

Two worlds combined

Two stories intertwined

Stars aligned and so perfectly timed

Beautiful- isn't it?

That is, when it's mutual- when it's unconditional

But neither are without flaw

Of course no one's perfect

Feelings may be mutual but thoughts can be different

Two different people are destined to disagree at some point

Will they work together or are they all about scoring points

Is she all about winning arguments?

How does he respond to conflict?

Feelings are mutual but they're so, so fickle

He knows that and she knows that too

When the butterflies fly away- What's left?

When that fuzzy feeling is all felt out- What's left?

What does she think that he thinks too?

What's does he believe that she does too?

Not all will be in common but opposites don't attract

All in all, love is something like a verb

She knows that and he knows that too

Something more than what just physically attracts

Such a thing that makes birds sing

For him- The thought of her that triggers bringing home a rose or two

For her- The thought of him that results in making dinner for two

For the both of them- the want to make the other happy

And intentionally so

Such a thing, so, so touching

Such a thing, in which the little things mean so much

Where love is omnipresent

In all places, even when emotions show up uninvited

For better and worse and moods both good and bad

In sickness and health

Hearts will speak and souls listen

Unconditional, even when the world contests

Comforting, when all one needs is rest

To bring her up from her lows and support him with the world on his shoulders

It's beautiful- isn't it?

That is, when it's mutual- when it's unconditional

Over mountains and through valleys

Across rivers and through wildfires

Unconditional

Such a thing, so touching

And beyond what is merely physical

Easy on the eyes

But so much more than what meets them

Mental- stimulating far deeper than what's conscious

Soft on the skin but far beneath the surface

Existing in the realm of the spiritual

Intentionally sweeter and longer lasting

They’re in this together

Free with each other

Sharing dreams and spending time

All the time that’s left

That is- when it's

Unconditional

The poem is about relationships, specifically romantic relationships. Something that I think is forgotten a lot as a part of even romantic relationships, is friendship. Communication and intentionality isn’t something that is shown in Hollywood’s or Netflix’s “Love Stories”. I have nothing against them. It is my personal belief (and feel free to disagree with this) that two people don’t just ‘fall in love’. Relationships, be it a friendship or romantic one, don’t just keep going themselves, it takes intentional investment to keep the relationship going, and healthy. Let me know what you think about this in the comments! And of course, thanks for reading!

About the Creator

Josh Morgan

Personally, writing began as a creative outlet, to be a means of processing and venting emotion, but it has become so much more. Something I want not to be just relatable, enjoyable and a good read, but to reach someone who is in need.
